Still, he had to be the clan leader before any other consideration. Hard-to-get would be a bargaining chip. "Refused."
"Why?" asked Jiraiya, who didn't appear surprised.
"While she has been a disappointment, she will be entering the Ninja Academy next month," said Hiashi. "She may yet establish herself as a credit to the main branch by excelling there."
"Okay," said Jiraiya, nodding. From where he'd been leaning casually against the wall, he simply pushed off with a roll of his shoulder. Then nodded at the clan head before taking his leave.
Hiashi smirked, certain that the Sannin would be back.
"So the Hyuga refused, but I have four other candidates for the part of 'princess' to push Naruto along," said Jiraiya to the Hokage two hours later.
"Oh?" asked Hiruzen Sarutobi, curious. Reactions to Naruto were slowly changing as information about his bloodline slowly began circulating.
"The Yamanaka clan has a daughter who can be very 'princessy' - and they're willing to delay her Academy entry for the extra training I can give," said Jiraiya. "There's two other clans interested, plus an orphaned Academy Student who volunteered herself."
"How did an Academy Student even learn of it?" asked Sarutobi.
"I think she overheard one of the other clan heads approaching me about it, and once she realized who I was..." Jiraiya shrugged. "Can't blame her. Clans with their own special techniques and abilities tend to dominate the Academy - looking for little advantages she can acquire is just good sense."
"So, who have you decided to take?" asked the Hokage.
"Who said I already decided? Someone could come up with a means of further convincing me," said Jiraiya with a leer and waggling his fingers in a suggestive manner.
"It's just us here," said the Hokage.
"Eh, true," said Jiraiya, shrugging. "Actually I decided to go with:"
