"Sensei? Why are you going to be unavailable? Is it a ninja mission?" asked one of the girls.
"In a manner of speaking," said Iruka. "I'm going to the Isle Of Dancing Waves and assisting with research there. Now, as to the teams."
The crowd settled down, listening.
"Team Setsuna. Jonin-sensei will be Setsuna Meioh," began Iruka. "Team specialization: infiltration and stealth ops. Shino Aburame, Michiru Kaioh, Gurio Umino."
Oh, I'm not on Naru's team? thought a disappointed Gurio.
Darn, I'm not on Gurio's team? thought a disappointed Naru.
"Team Mamoru," continued Iruka. "Jonin-sensei will be Mamoru Chiba. Team Specialization: Light Assault."
"Uhm, excuse me sensei? What does 'light assault' mean?" asked Tobio.
"Each of the teams is selected for various reasons, but one of the basic concepts is a 'specialist' team," said Iruka. "This was covered last year, so some of you might not remember. Light Assault teams are skirmishers. These teams specialize in speed and in 'hit and run' tactics. Infiltration teams are used for spying, covert operations in which a cover identity is used and maintained, and other work where no one should know you're actually ninja on an assignment."
Shino Aburame and Michiru glanced at each other, then Haruka shrugged ever so slightly. They could see why THEY were on such a team, but Gurio was less obvious.
"In any case," continued Iruka. "Team Mamoru will be composed of: Haruka Tenou, Minako, and Kiba Inuzuka."
"Oh, great," said Haruka, sounding miffed. "I'm with scruffy?"
Kiba growled slightly in response, knowing from past interaction that she was NOT referring to Akamaru.
"Heel, boy," responded Haruka.
Iruka cleared his throat. "Team Guy was filled last year and is still active. Team Kurenai. Jonin sensei is Kurenai Yuhi. Team Specialization: Reconnaisance and information gathering. Hinata Hyuga, Naru Osaka, Rei Hino."
"Oh, I'm not with Naruto-kun," was the disappointed Hinata's muttered comment.
"Team Kakashi," said Iruka. "Jonin is Kakashi Hatake. Team Specialization: Heavy Assault. Sasuke Uchiha, Makoto Kino, and Usagi Tsukino."
"Okay, I can see Makoto, but Usagi?" asked Haruka. "On a Heavy Assault team?"
"It's also a Leaf tradition that we put the Rookie Of The Year and the 'dead last' on the same team with the top scoring kunoichi," admitted Iruka. "However, this year's top scoring kunoichi was Ami - who is going to another team."
"It's not my fault?" asked Usagi.
"Team Asuma," continued Iruka. "Ino Yamanaka, Choji Akamachi, Shikamaru Nara. Generalist team."
"How troublesome, they're trying for a repeat of the Ino-Shika-Cho trio," complained Shikamaru.
"Basing a team on a hanafuda hand?" asked Tobio.
"Stranger things have happened," admitted Iruka. "Team Clef. Jonin-sensei is Clef. Fuu Hououji, Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki. Specialization: Heavy Assault."
"This is gonna be cool!" said Hikaru.
"Team Aya, we started running out of jonin available to be sensei, so you get a chunin until one becomes available," said Iruka. "Team leader: Aya Sugimoto. Specialization: D-Rank missions. Tobio, Joe Redshirt, and Sakura Haruno."
"I've got a very bad feeling about this," opined Sakura.
"That's funny, so do I," said Joe, looking nervous.
"Team Anko, under Anko Mitarashi," said Iruka. "She's a special jonin, so I expect that she's temporary too. Which is actually fortunate for her genin."
"Oh, I don't like the sound of THAT," said Naruto nervously.
"Team Specialization: General, subspecialization with medical. Naruto Uzumaki, Hotaru Tomoe, Ami Mizuno."
Anko Mitarashi knew this would be brief. She knew this group didn't fit her at all. She decided to look at the genin before introducing herself.
A medic team? mused Anko silently as she hid and watched. She'd read the files. She matched them up easily enough.
The blue haired girl in the blue shorts and oversized white shirt was forming icicles out of the air and throwing them at a target. Ami Mizuno. Daughter of Kumori Mizuno, one of the best medic-nin the Leaf has produced since Tsunade. Wants to follow in her mother's footsteps. Best academic scores in her class, would have graduated two years ago except for her scores in taijutsu. One of Roachy's successes, she has Hyoton/Ice Release abilities. Has been known to form senbon and bo-shuriken out of ice. Has trouble manifesting larger amounts due to chakra limitations.
Anko considered the academic for a moment, deciding that a VERY intensive exercise program would be in the girl's future.
That brought her to the next one, who was sitting down and doing some sort of stretching exercise.
Anko's eyes narrowed as a brief purple light formed in the girl's hands. Okay, maybe it wasn't a stretch. Hotaru Tomoe, daughter of the self-proclaimed 'mad scientist' Soichiro Tomoe. Wants to be a nurse. Gets along well with Ami. Was originally put down as Force Release kekkei genkai, but that doesn't quite jibe with some of the results. Another of Roachy's successes, though not as total as some of the others. Has some serious flaw in her stamina, tires out way too easy. Monstrous chakra levels though - possibly jinchuriki levels though has trouble tapping that with her stamina problem. Considers Naruto Uzumaki to be her big brother, with Uzumaki reciprocating that relationship.
That brought Anko to consider the guy sparring himself.
Naruto Uzumaki. Jinchuriki of the Ninetailed Demon Fox. Wants to be Hokage, or at least claims that. Learned the Shadow Clone technique due to Mizuki, and then proceeded to beat Mizuki half to death for threatening Hotaru. Mizuki now has severe frostbite 'from unknown cause' as well as some other injuries that don't quite fit Naruto's method of attack. His taijutsu could use some work.
