His name was Soiyo Happ. While he was still quite young, barely an adult by gnomish standards, already he had developed something of a reputation.
At an early age it had been discovered that he had an unusual affinity for magic and starting very young he had been apprenticed to various masters of the mystical arts, learning with a swiftness that surprised many of those he served.
A defining moment in his young life came in the small desert town of Amkethran, when he watched in wonder as his then master, the mystic smith Kerrick, created a supremely powerful suit of armor (with accompanying weapons) out of the most, er… unlikely set of ingredients.
Intrigued by the apparent power Kerrick’s techniques offered, he diligently applied himself to its study. He soon mastered the basics, but a falling out with Kerrick necessitated a change of residence. And so he took himself (along with several books ‘borrowed’ from his former master) to Thay.
There he experimented and soon became quite powerful in the obscure field of clothing-derived magic. His experiments soon revealed to him that some clothes worked far better than others. He had yet to achieve anywhere near the results Kerrick had produced, but he had recently made a breakthrough. Originally, he had stayed with Kerrick’s , er, ‘specialty’, but his latest experiments revealed to him that far more power could be derived from, uhm, slightly different garments. Unfortunately, his studies had been interrupted by several irate sorceresses who didn’t appreciate his chosen field of study. Or his variation of the... material components... he used for his spells.
Relocating far to the west, he had gone to Waterdeep and only just started to resume his studies when a group of adventurers interrupted him at his work.
Although initially surprised, he had managed to ambush the paladin and with her at his mercy he had convinced the others to drop their packs and leave. Afterward, he locked the paladin in a room in the basement so she would be out of the way. He would decide what to do about her later. The girl’s packs had provided just what he needed for his work!
