"Yes. You died in the process of keeping Armisael from going after Shinji Ikari."
Rei blinked and looked around, trying to spot where the voice had come from.
A spotlight formed from nothing to illumine a single figure in the otherwise featureless dark.
Rei recognized the figure only as a tall human she was otherwise unfamiliar with. A muscular-looking man with a full head of shaggy gray hair and long beard.
"Still not much of a conversationalist, are you?" asked the old man. "Fine fine. I am known by many names, but the closest one to dominance in this universe would be Loki. Not the Marvel Comics version either. Especially not the live-action movie version."
"I am unfamiliar with the reference," stated Rei softly.
"Yes, I know," said the old man. "Fine. I'm an N-Dimensional Entity capable of rewriting reality. To make things simpler, I will do so when you state a particular desire."
Rei blinked.
"Yes, I know you don't regard yourself as having desires, but I can look a little deeper. You do have some. Since the local worldlaws are easier to work with instead of against, you have to state a particular desire and then I can work with that in the terms of a formal contract where I provide the change you request and you try to handle the results."
Rei blinked again.
"For the laughs and amusement value," said the Being. "Because right now, Shinji will be eventually broken by his own inner demons and the way he is treated - and will be put into a position where he directs Third Impact into a situation which is not at all amusing."
Rei blinked and tilted her head slightly.
"Yes, as a matter of fact, I can change it so that you're a normal girl. I can turn you into Sailor Mercury if that's what you want. Or I could have a cascade effect go wild and have the cloning process produce thousands of Rei who have little or no genetic tie to Yui Ikari. Or I could have each of the Rei develop their own soul, and have you all become the twelve Senshi of Christmas or something."
Rei tilted her head the other way and blinked.
"It's a knack."
Rei straightened her head and opened her mouth slightly.
"If this is just some sensory deprivation hallucination, then you could just humor me and give it a try. Though honestly, is this scenario something you would normally come up with?"
Rei frowned slightly, then shook her head ever so minimally. No, this was not the sort of thing she'd expect to occur in some dream or hallucination.
"And just so you know, I can backtrack the changes. You can have started out different from the moment of conception in that tube - or even before. You could be Shinji's twin sister if you wanted to be, not identical though. It's best if you remain mostly yourself in physical appearance. You could be a catgirl, winged angel girl, or able to turn into a giant robot if you really wanted."
Rei frowned ever so slightly again.
"Yeah. I know. I wanted to put it on the table anyway."
Rei considered the darkness briefly before turning to the Being again.
