Mischief Fragment: Eva: Rei, Ichi, Ni, San, Shu... [Episode 243219]

by Kestral

"You don't read manga? Why am I not surprised?"

Rei stared blankly at the Being.

"No, actually, I don't even try the omniscient route."

Rei blinked.

"That's another deity altogether."

Rei's lip twitched ever so slightly.

"Okay. That'll do. I'll throw in that all of you are sufficiently different genetically that if you wanted to have kids with Shinji, you can do that.

Rei's left eyebrow rose two microns.

"Because I basically pinch off an extension of myself in order to exist in a lower-energy limited-existence universe. Otherwise I might sneeze and blow out every sun in your universe or create some Eldritch Being or something. Which isn't any fun at all. Been there, done that."

Rei tilted her head a tiny bit.

"A) it wasn't your universe. B) I got them restarted a few seconds later. Well, mostly. Some of them got replaced with alternative light sources."

Rei's mouth opened slightly and her head moved an increment forward.

"Right. Well, the thing is that I'm turning you into Sailor Mercury. NOT Ami Mizuno. You and the other Rei will be the new Sailor Senshi. Some things will be the same though. Sailor Mercury being able to scan things and having a genius IQ. Sailor Jupiter being bustier and skilled domestically. Stuff like that. I'm using elements and Elements, not overwriting you in order to make them. I'm still deciding whether to use Sailor suits or just a different costume concept to link in. Maybe maids or catgirls or mecha musume or something..."

Rei nodded as suddenly the past SHIFTED.

Two years after Second Impact:
"Can I look now?" asked Gendo Ikari.

"Yes," said Yui Ikari. "Now would be a good time."

Gendo did and stared. "Wh-what?"

"This is a backup plan," explained Yui, leaving Gendo's side to walk down the steps into the room. "I used genetic data from a fertility clinic which had survived the power outages. I also used genetic material from Adam, which seems to have affected the remaining genetic data from the fertilized ovum. Meet the Rei series."

"They look identical," said Gendo. "This is a 'Backup plan'?"

"If Third Impact occurs, they'd be immune," said Yui. "They're not entirely of this world, but some of the next. If even one of them mates with Shinji when the time comes - something of a human legacy will survive."

"What of Project-E?" asked Gendo.

"Continuing as planned, of course," said Yui, clicking up computer monitors in the nursery. "Likewise the Human Instrumentality Project."

Gendo nodded.

"I code-named the Rei after the planets, this one is Mercury," said Yui, stopping before the first one.

"Where did she get the glasses?" asked Gendo. "Or the infant-sized labcoat?"

"I don't know," admitted Yui. "I think she saw me wearing that and the labcoat and that's why they keep popping up on her. Her primary genetic source was a pediatrician from Juuban."

"I see," said Gendo. "What other genetic sources besides that one and Adam?"

"They're related to you and I, though it would be more like a distant branch member of the family - less than 5%," said Yui. "In a way, these are all our daughters though."

"I see," repeated Gendo, pushing his own glasses up higher on his nose.

Eleven years after Second Impact:
"So here we have Rei, the smart one. She's a genius with a number of subjects - tested IQ is off the charts."

"I see," said Misato, looking at the girl with the glasses and labcoat, who didn't even glance up from where she was working with some sort of CAD software.

"Ichi is the combat-ninja girl of the set," said Ritsuko, walking past an apparently empty room.

"Uhm," said Misato, about to point out that Ichi had apparently escaped.

"She's still in there," said Ritsuko. "Moon is... will someone untie Moon please?"

"S-sorry," said the little girl who'd managed to tangle herself up in a jump rope so that she resembled a little ball of arms and legs.

"Something wrong with her motor skills," said Ritsuko. "Sanko is our fourth Rei, who fancies herself a shrine priestess."

"Your face is most ominous," proclaimed Shiko, brandishing a paper ward.

"I'll give you ominous," promised Misato before realizing she was threatening a ten year old kid and looking a little sheepish about it.

"Shinko didn't like the name or that we started with 'zero' and so has repeatedly requested a name change," said Ritsuko.

"How about 'Flora'?" asked the well-developed-for-her-age girl in the next room.

"No," said Ritsuko, passing the girl by. "Next we have Go, codename Saturn."

The girl in the room waved and gave a slightly sad smile towards Misato.

"So let me guess, nine girls whose names run from 'one' to 'nine' and are code-named after planets?" asked Misato.

"Yes," said Ritsuko. "All of whom have some odd talents. Rei is able to manifest water and is considered a genius. Ichi is able to manifest various techniques that mythical ninja were reputed to. Niko, whom we've been calling Moon or Moon Unit, has manifested a light-emitting ability. Sanko has odd clairvoyant abilities, plus can generate small amounts of fire. Shinko uses electricity, can sense and manipulate it to some extent. Go can manipulate earth and stone."

"And dresses as a goth apparently," said Misato.

"There's the tomboyish wouldst-be track-star, Roku," said Ritsuko. "The artistically inclined Shichi, and the... Has anyone seen Kyuu?"

One of the nurses pointed towards the ceiling.

"Kyuu!" Ritsuko scolded a ventilation grating.

A Rei with her hair tied back in a pigtail and wearing a martial arts gi popped the grating and dropped to the floor.

"You know better than that," continued to scold Ritsuko. "You'll get into a competition with Ichi again and you know how those escalate."

"A thousand pardons, Doctor Akagi," said Kyuu softly.
