"Yeah," said Sasuke as their jonin led them deeper into the complex. "That was kind of confusing."
"Well," said Kakashi, as he waved at a chunin who did some hand seals that caused the wall to open up. "That's why I'm bringing you here. I could explain it, but it's best someone who deals with it should."
"You just want to go back to reading your book," observed Sasuke.
"That too," said Kakashi, pulling his book out and finding a corner to read it in.
Naruto was already looking over the room. "Fuuinjutsu. Permanently engraved in the walls, ceiling, floors."
"That's right," said an older ninja. "So you two are going to be the team-mates of our little foundling."
"Yeah, so what's this all about?" asked Sasuke.
"She's not from the Demon Realm, is she?" asked Naruto.
"Not quite," said the old ninja. "Now let me explain this setup. You may have noticed that we have radios and other equipment we don't really know how to manufacture. We summon them. If we have a good idea of what we're summoning, we can usually get what we're trying for. On the other hand, sometimes we get something else altogether. Usually it's just some weird sock."
"A sock?" asked Naruto.
"Yes," said the old ninja. "Only one and they never match any of the others. Well, rarely. We recycle the cloth where we can. Sometimes we get something strange or useless. This time we got a girl. VERY strange. Still trying to work out how that happened."
"So you don't know how you got her here, so you definitely can't send her back then either, am I right?" asked Naruto.
"True," said the old man.
"So where do these things come from?" asked Sasuke, looking over a small pile of very odd things.
"The summoning method we use draws from alternate worlds, worlds like our own but where things went in some way different," said the old man. "It's dangerous sometimes. We've pulled items over that turned out to have some nasty traps on them. Or they've had some poison on them. Usually though we get stuff that is packed in styrofoam. We then send the styrofoam off to be recycled and made into cups and stuff."
"So this is a 'Sakura Haruno' from some 'world like our own but different'?" asked Naruto, still apparently inspecting the engraved fuuinjutsu. "What kind of world?"
The old man adjusted his glasses and paused as if trying to put everything together himself. "Well, as near as we can tell from the details from the interrogation, her world-"
