Yuuno was hovering between the helicopter and the raging battle, putting out a protective barrier.
Fate was also hovering nearby, her previous opponent apparently feeling that the kaiju was a greater threat. Fate... didn't have much problem with that sort of assessment.
Two magical girls that they DIDN'T know were apparently throwing shields up every so often to protect the civilians who were fleeing the danger zone.
Which brought her to the kaiju that the Dark Magical Girls had apparently summoned and lost control over.
"You're not seeing a special-effects movie, folks! A nine-tailed fox kaiju," said Midori Yukata, the reporter who stuck her head up every so often to make sure she was in the shot, "has been summoned by real-life Dark Magical Girls and is rampaging through Uminari City! Oh! Here comes the JSDF!"
"We're retreating to a safe distance," yelled the helicopter pilot. "They're going to attack! Can we tell the good guys to retreat?"
"Yeah," said Nanoha, waving her arms at Fate. "That might be a good idea."
"Captain, we're within range of the kaiju!"
Captain Hideyoshi Kawamura nodded, watching the rampage of the beast through his binoculars. As Captain of the Kongo class destroyer Kirishima, he knew his duty and his ship's capabilities.
"Aircraft approaching, ident is a squadron of F-15s from Misawa."
"We'll wait till they're back out of the line-of-fire, then fire. Status on evac?"
"Looks like those magic-girls are protecting the main route out for the civilians."
Captain Kawamura nodded as he lowered the binoculars.
The jets were F-15E Strike Eagles. Seventeen of them quickly loaded and launched. Each carried six AGM-65 Maverick-A missiles. None of them had experience with fighting kaiju, but all of them had a pretty good idea of what to do.
Each of the jets launched half their missiles in their initial approach in a single wave that struck the kaiju dead on before the kaiju even realized what those things were.
Except for five missiles, three of which were cut in half by Signum, one which was hammered by Vita, and one of which managed to hit Zafira.
The impact of those was enough to stagger the kaiju. One blew up when Signum cut it in half. The one Vita hit, and the one Zafira was hit by, both blew up with their WDU-24/B blast-fragmentation warheads making nice little fireballs.
At which point the Dark Magical Girls started going after the jets.
Hayate felt relief at her Wolkenritter friends surviving the attack on them.
That relief began to fray a bit at the edges as she saw the televised footage of them going after the jets. Still, that was perfectly understandable that once attacked they might counter-attack, right?
When the camera zoomed in on a pilot whose chute had been deployed being struck in the chest by Vita's hammer - that was a little less understandable.
There was again a little relief as she saw Shamal appear as the now-unconscious pilot hit the ground. Then that relief evaporated when Shamal stuck her hand into the pilot's chest and brought some shiny object out.
Okay. They were definitely going to have to do some explaining.
"You saw it here live folks!" said a completely vindicated Midori Yukata. "Not only did these Dark Magical Girls go after an already defeated opponent - they sucked out his soul! Or something. Isn't that what Dark Magical Girls do in the manga?"
"Maybe they are Dark Magical Girls," said the injured good-guy magical girl.
Midori thought about it. Hadn't that boy called her 'Nanoha'? That might be her real name though, and while they could bleep it out at the studio - best to minimize that just in case. "Uhm. Magical girl? We really need to get you a superhero name if you don't already have one."
"Uhm," said Nanoha, suddenly reminded of the camera pointing at her.
"AH!" yelped the helicopter pilot. "One of them's coming after us now!"
"Oh crap," said Midori, who then turned to the cameraman. "You're tethered. Try to film as much as you can. That way even if we all die, the story gets out!"
"Today is a good day to die," said the cameraman, still shooting pictures as much as possible as the crazy girl with the hammer came towards them. As the helicopter attempted to flee, he ended up leaning out as far as his tether would allow to get the pursuit recorded. "Personally, I think it would be a better day to go have a few drinks after work and then go home."
Signum grimaced. One of those machine-users had been a nascent mage with a linker core, but as he'd been an untrained mage - they hadn't gotten much off him. Instead they still had a rampaging monster-beast, the locals taking shots at them, the Device-user had gotten allies, and their simple grab operation had gone tumbling downhill faster than anything she could remember.
Now Vita had gotten to her pissed-beyond-all-reason stage.
They had to take down this monster before it destroyed the city that Hayate lived in, and the logical move would have been to temporarily ally with these Device-users for that purpose.
Unfortunately, that didn't really seem to be possible at this juncture.
They, all of them, had gotten stuck in a React mode instead of being able to go forward with any sort of plan.
Something else impinged on her senses, and Signum had to bite down the response to grimace at another complication added.
