Mischief Fragment - Destroyer: Kyubi's opening move [Episode 250441]

by Kestral

Kyubi decided to reward its rescuers. A tail lashed out.

The girl in green, the one who had apparently grabbed him to begin with, made a satisfying airborne straight line where she went through the window of one of the ridiculously tall buildings nearby. From the sound, she went through that window, through some walls, and then out the other side.

At which point her companions started using weapons and throwing jutsu at him.

This was familiar territory in a way the odd city was not. The Kyubi responded in kind.

Nanoha watched in horror as the office buildings (fortunately this was night so they were at least MOSTLY empty) were quickly coming apart as these strangers who had attacked her had produced some huge monster, and were now fighting it. The only real result she could see happening was that Uminari City was going to lose.

This was brought especially home when one of the beast's tails cut through one office building, another tail lifted the cut-off section up, and the woman that Fate had been fighting was swatted with it before it collapsed.

Then she noticed the helicopter coming in, and Nanoha realized she would have to fly despite her injuries. Raising Heart wasn't available and still in pieces in her hands thanks to that red-haired hammerwielding girl, so she'd have to do this without. Which meant... "Yuuno! I need your help."

"Oh my dear sweet kami, IT'S A KAIJU! This will put Uminari City on the map!"

"Uhm, Midori? It's a kaiju. This will wipe Uminari City off the map."

Midori blinked at her cameraman as that penetrated. "Right. Oh hell. What's going on here? We've got REAL magical girls and some wolf fighting a real-life kaiju! Believe it, folks! Trust me, our station couldn't afford special effects like this!"

"We don't even have enough budget to own a helicopter, we just have this rental one," muttered the cameraman. Who really knew better but his professional silence was a bit strained by what he was seeing.

"Uhm, excuse me?" said a young girl supported by a young boy as they flew up in front of the camera bay. "It really isn't safe here."

"You're a magical girl?" asked Midori. "Magical boy?"

"Yuuno's actually a ferret," mumbled the girl.

"I have to put a shield up, you're really not safe here," said Yuuno, letting Nanoha off and flying back outside again. After all, this is her world - she'll know how to deal with this situation.

The newscaster glanced at the cameraman, saw that the live feed was still going, and decided to run with the ball that had been handed her.

"You're injured," realized Midori aloud. "Did the other magical girls do this?"

"Yes," said Nanoha absently. "I don't know why. I was doing my homework when the one attacked me. I didn't even have my Barrier Jacket going."

The cameraman glanced up as shrapnel bounced off the shield the boy was putting up.

"You weren't in your superhero identity when they went after you, and you haven't seen them before?" asked Midori. "That must make them Dark Magical Girls."

"I don't know about..." Nanoha turned and stared into the camera, that presence fully registering for the first time. "Uhm. Is that on?"

"Come on, the servants have the bags packed," said her sister.

"It's... Nanoha," said the girl.

"Miss Alisa?" asked one of the servants, stopping in order to look at the television herself. "It is! It's Miss Alisa's friend Nanoha!"

The packing momentarily paused.

"I take it Nanoha didn't tell you she was a magical girl?" asked one of the servants.

Alisa blinked a couple of times before her shoulders set into place and she drew herself up. "Bentley! Get Security! We need to provide covering fire!"

"Miss Alisa? We don't actually have weapons meant to take on kaiju or dark magical girls," pointed out the servant, who was actually an employee of her parents who did all sorts of things as well as being functional head of security. His Scottish brogue was beginning to show, the sole indication of his agitation, which sounded especially bizarre in Japanese.

"No?" asked Alisa.

"Well, not yet," admitted Bentley. "As soon as you and the Masters are safe, I shall start inquiring about some."

"So THAT was the secret?" asked Suzuka Tsukimura as she watched the TV in her limousine as it sped away. "Driver! Stop! We have to go assist Nanoha!"

"Pardon me, young miss," said the driver very politely, "but my orders came from your mother and taking you to safety IS my number one priority."

"Has... Nanoha been fighting as a magical girl for very long?" asked Shiro of his wife.

"I didn't know either," confessed Momoko Takamichi.

The studio was already taking what information they had so far and were putting it together as quickly as they could.

A magical girl and her ferret/young boy companion, joined by a blonde girl who were protecting the helicopter from the kaiju attacks while the Dark Magical Girls who had somehow summoned the monster did battle with it.

"...it seems to be the classic Sorcerer's Apprentice problem," said a hastily-contacted expert. Though actually she was a writer of manga - that was the best they could do at the moment.

"Sorcerer's Apprentice? Like Mickey Mouse?" asked the anchorwoman, not getting it.

"No, like the old story," said the manga writer/artist. "In the original story, the sorcerer's apprentice reaches for power but doesn't have the control necessary to be able to direct that power. The spell, the animated brooms, goes out of control. These Dark Magical Girls attacked our local magical girls, and then tried to summon more power. They got something they themselves couldn't control."

"Ah, there goes the Junes Department Store!" cried the anchorman from his position, pointing at a monitor.

"Everyone, the police are calling for an orderly evacuation, please cooperate with them as they try to direct you out of the danger zone," said the weathergirl, cutting in and thinking both anchors were pretty damn useless in an emergency. "You can listen to this broadcast on our sister station 101.5 on the FM dial. They've hooked up for simulcast as they themselves try to get out of danger."

"We're looking at another scene, there's another group of magical girls trying to assist those fleeing the scene," said Midori.

"Dang it, he HAD to say 'keep the civilians safe'," grumbled Lina, making a gesture. A stalled car was lifted up out of the way.

"He did indeed," said Ifurita.

"Well, as soon as they get clear, we can settle into the time-honored tradition of kicking major ass," said Lina sweetly.

Ifurita nodded and blasted three large chunks of incoming rubble into dust.

"Don't you know any teleportation techniques?" asked Lina.

"Not that would affect that many people," said Ifurita. "You?"

"I'd have used it already," said Lina. "Come on, people! Move it! Do you WANT to be squished by a berserking magic-energy construct?"
