Mischief Fragment - Replay/Shinmei: Kyon, student ninja? [Episode 250764]

by Kestral

It took Yuki Nagato almost five minutes to find a site that had archived the series, mainly because the series was fairly obscure and had recently started - airing at midnight.

Despite those negatives, it looked to be of high production values though the art style was a bit odd. Further, it appeared that Kyon didn't join the cast until episode six!

Episode 1: Boy Meets Sword
Episode 2: I'm Not A Ninja, Damn It!
Episode 3: A Testy Sensei
Episode 4: Sakura Leaves Leaf
Episode 5: D-Rank, D-Pay, D-Headache
Episode 6: Kyon
Episode 7: Train To Live (new)

"Who's Sakura?" asked Mikuru.

"Nobody important if she left in the fourth episode," said Haruhi, though she didn't sound completely confident.

"Which one to start with?" asked Yuki, looking around at the rest of the SOS Brigade.

"The most recent one," decided Haruhi. "We can always go back and watch the others, right?"

Yuki moved the mouse, clicked it, and was rewarded by the series beginning.

"They call me 'Kyon' here in this Village Hidden In The Leaves, a ninja village on a world where legendary ninja live and fight and struggle. I was of Earth until a foolish young goddess made a wish, hurling her long-suffering supporter beyond her reach.

"Very long suffering.

"Have I mentioned the suffering part?

"Will I die before I can even graduate high school in this foreign land? Will the young goddess/sorceress and her companions figure out how to get me back? Will I adapt to this universe, 'retconning' into this universe like in that one old anime?

"Sword Of The Leaf starts now. I'm counting on you!"

Kyon slumped to the ground, complete exhaustion evident.

"Okay," said Kakashi Hatake. "Stamina and strength are definitely not your strong points. You have normal levels of chakra, for a civilian with absolutely no training at all. Your throwing skills are nonexistent. Your weapons skills are the same, except that you at least can manage the most basic proficiency with archery and two-handed sword."

"Phys-ed," groaned Kyon.

"What IS that, anyway?" asked Naruto.

"Physical education, gym class," groaned Kyon. "We covered the basics of Kendo and Japanese Archery at one point."

"Right," said Kakashi. "Unarmed combat... you've never been in a real fight before, have you?"

"Why are you even on a ninja team?" asked Sasuke.

"Ne ne, Sasuke," said Kakashi. "He's here because he doesn't have an actual choice. He doesn't fit in anywhere, he has no job, doesn't know any of our customs, and he was summoned during the working of a ninjutsu. Where else would they put him?"

"I was thinking 'file clerk' at the Hokage's office," said Naruto, deciding he wouldn't object to the whole "ninja team" thing for the moment.

Sasuke glanced at Naruto, having expected an objection. He decided that the blonde swordsman was worried about the third member of their team most likely getting killed the first time they went outside the village.

"I think, with work, he can get to the level of an Academy student," said Kakashi. "Maybe the Academy Three, though how long that would take remains to be seen."

"He's asleep," noted Naruto aloud.

"Definitely need work on that stamina and recovery time," noted Kakashi.

"Did they just chase Kyon around the village, throwing a kunai at his feet every time he slowed down?" asked Haruhi. "What kind of insane test is that?"

"A ninja test," said Itsuki, as if it were obvious.

Mikuru lay there, draped over her chair - having fainted at some point during the 'avoid pointy objects' section of test.

"I wish Kyon were here so I could give him a piece of my mind!" declared Haruhi.

"Nothing," said Itsuki after he'd judged a suitable amount of time had passed.

"Knew that would be too easy," muttered Haruhi under her breath.

Yuki sat back and contemplated the screen of her computer as the end theme played. "They'll apparently upload the next episode next week."

"Which animation studio is doing it?" asked Itsuki.

"'Laughing Cat Studios'?" asked Yuki. "Why?"

"Letter writing campaign to keep them from killing off the character of Kyon?" suggested Itsuki.

Then the trailer for the next episode began playing and drew everyone's attention back to the screen.

"You need chakra to be able to use explosive tags and the like," said Kakashi, flicking a tag towards a tree where it exploded and turned a branch into so many splinters.

What am I doing flinching from a little explosion like that? I'm in a freaking ninja world for crying out loud! Why does this sort of thing have to happen to me?! Kyon grimaced. "Right. Chakra."

"Explosive tags and the like will increase your chance of survival," said Kakashi. "However to do that, we need to build your chakra up to at least Academy Student levels."

"More training?" asked Kyon.

"Much more training," admitted Kakashi.
