There/then - Naruto was on the roof of a small cottage outside the village walls, reading the scroll of forbidden jutsu. Multiple Shadow Clones was on there due to the chakra cost and psychic feedback problems. Shadow Clone was much easier on the chakra system and less overwhelming, so the single-copy version was simply a high rank technique and not listed except as part of the technique.
Elsewhere in the village, a certain traitor named Mizuki's left foot slipped. This would be a minor thing normally, except that he was running and leaping from roof to roof. Except that he was doing that in the outer parts of Konoha. Except that this caused him to miss a landing spot on the roof of the Cute Kunoichi (Women's Only) Bathing House. Except that he missed the roof entirely.
Shakily getting up, and finding that one handhold was the left breast of Special Jonin Anko Mitarashi was his first indication that his life had careened from "exactly as planned" to "oh hell I'm going to die" and a resulting chase that delayed things considerably.
During the entire time he cursed whoever it was that had left a banana peel on the roof.
Another flick of the tail happened after Naruto had learned Multiple Shadow Clone (Tajuu Kage Bunshin) and went on to the next technique. Glancing over it, he frowned and considered the parts of it that just seemed wrong somehow.
You needed a living body here and you had to do all this stuff ahead of time, and there was this qualifier and that exception and this big bird dropping here.
"DAMNIT!" said Naruto, glaring at the bird that had fluttered overhead and dropped a load. Turning back he started to try and piece together what was obscured.
Maybe if you did this here?
Iruka paused as Mizuki ran by, shrieking in terror.
"GET HIM!"
"HE'LL PAY FOR THIS!"
"HOW DARE HE?!"
"STOP RIGHT THERE YOU PERVERT!"
Iruka was glad he hadn't drawn attention to himself as the crowd passed him by.
As it was, he got a good look at one dropped towel before the kunoichi in question went back and got that and covered herself again.
Iruka just stood there in the shadows, waiting for his nose to stop bleeding. Sure, he had to find Naruto right away. If those girls saw him reacting to their mostly nakedness though - he'd be delayed a LOT longer.
As well as heavily injured. Yeah, best to hide in the shadows and not be seen at the moment.
Naruto checked the little book he'd picked up on fuuinjutsu ("Seals, Sigils, and Arrays - Fuuinjutsu For Dummies") at that weird little shop and checked the diagrams he'd scribbled into the dirt. Then he checked the forbidden scroll.
"Yosh! This'll be so awesome they'll immediately make me a ninja and that'll be another step to being Hokage!" declared Naruto, fist raised skyward. "Believe it!"
Now, blood - symbolic of life. A kunai and he could provide that. Now he should just shove as much chakra as he could into it and -
It really should have done nothing.
Edo Tensei required precision, required special kunai with fuuinjutsu tags made in advance, required living bodies bound and placed into coffins in which the ashes of the person to be resurrected were coated.
It should not have worked at all.
That it was a heavily modified Edo Tensei should not have made the slightest difference in that outcome.
A tail flicked.
Symbols scratched in the dirt shifted. Blood crawled from a splash of red into a symbol.
Lightning flashed. Thunder rolled. The air rippled.
There was enough of a discharge of chakra and power in the air that a crowd of kunoichi was distracted and Mizuki escaped their wrath.
"AGH! MY BOOK!" screamed Naruto as he noticed his fuuinjutsu book had been dropped and was currently on fire.
The center of the circle was obscured by smoke, but by the time Naruto was able to look away from his burning textbook it had begun to clear.
Someone moved within that smoke, stepping out and looking down at the short summoner.
Someone who would become Naruto's sensei in the ninja arts.
