She had just never considered that something could be as important to him.
That was until he gave her the present, and her father had come up with his conclusions. Things that she had never really thought about had come under a different light at that moment. A part of her said that it couldn't be, that she wasn't his type. That part told her that he likely just had a crush or something.
But another said that there was something more to it. Could he really care for her? Was she the one that he liked like that? She had never considered something like that.
First off, she had given up on thoughts of dating like other girls did. Her family needed her and that was it. Occasionally there might be someone that she thought might think her attractive, but she never really tried to do anything about it. Doc Tofu had turned out to just be so silly, and Yasukichi had his eggs to play with, and the others she usually thought to be only her imagination.
Yet now she had other things to consider. If her father was right, then Ranma had been hiding a crush for a very long time. That spoke of depths that she had never thought that a younger man could have. He had apparently forgone any chance of that type of relationship with her to keep her from getting into trouble. Instead of trying to come on to her, he had been noble and been content to watch from a distance.
Just this book could be proof of that possibility. First off, he had to care for her if he was going to let go of something that had 'martial arts' in the title. He, the young man who forgot names easily, had made it a point to remember her birthday. While Nabiki might give her potholders and Akane might buy her a new hat, Ranma had gone and tried to get her something that he hoped that she would enjoy. And instead of a cookbook, he had gotten her a refrence on something that he had seen that she was interested in.
For the strangest reason, there was a slight bit of hope warring with denial and family honor, but it was still there. So, she took his gift and began to read it, taking extra care to read it through.
Because no matter how it was meant, this was something that he meant that he had cared about her enough to take the time and effort to get.
However there was still a little smile on her face as she read the book while:
