In many timelines and dimensions, that status as a primitive world protected us from fairly nasty predators as treaties between galactic superpowers and alien wisdom guaranteed non-interference in our affairs.
Alas, this time around, it didn't work.
First Contact between humans and aliens was made during the nineteenth century. The problem was that our visitors were a nasty, amoral extraterrestrial race who specialized in intergalactic slavery. Earth had fallen to the invasion fairly quickly. Humans didn't stand a chance at their current stage of development.
In the aliens' opinion, humans were a barbaric, primitive and oversexed species as a whole. They capitalized on the last aspect. When they began their genetic manipulations, their intent was made clear:
As a few B movies would say, the aliens had come to take OUR WOMEN!!! (Dun! Dun! DUUUN!!)
The human genome was modified in order to produce a great number of aesthetically pleasing, horny and submissive female sex slaves. The male to female ratio began shifting until an astounding level of one male for nearly one hundred females was reached in only a few generations!
Humans were at a great disadvantage since only men (they were still kept around for the gene pool and reproduction's sake) could entertain thoughts of rebellion. And only a rare few took that step since collaboration with the occupant was very gratifying (One word: Harem).
Then at the end of the twentieth century, our saviors came: a joint fleet of the Galaxy Police and the Empire of Jurai laid waste to the invaders' forces. At last, Mankind was free but the invaders' manipulations remained.
Earth was now a protectorate of Jurai. The Science Academy's experts in genetics were working on a way to repair the damage to our DNA but that task would take years, even decades, to accomplish.
"This is a nightmare!!!" was Setsuna's last thought before her mind degraded to that of a typical human female of this world.
