In that distant age (the 1970s) the two had heard of a master thief and as they were supporting themselves through theft, went to study under him.
That thief turned out to be Happosai.
That now had never happened. Soun Tendo had gotten distracted and caught by a shopkeeper. By the time he'd caught up with Genma, it was obvious that studying under Happosai would be torture. Mainly because Genma was being tortured when Soun saw him.
Soun left his old friend there. He'd study under another Master thank you very much.
So the two did not suffer together under the Master. There was no strengthened bond between them and Soun never made the engagement pledge with Genma.
Instead Soun Tendo studied under a Master named:
