Sigma hated this world. Compared to what he was used to... this was pathetic. It was like trying to move through molasses. No... that would be faster. Even the most advanced computers he'd encountered so far were primitive and cumbersome by his standards.
On the other hand, he could cut through even the best security like a hot knife through butter.
That was how he'd come across Project: Wideawake. He had caught a glimpse of the plans for a robot in passing and homed in on it.
Much too large (it had been his experience that all great size did was make it easier for his enemies to dodge....) Too many weapons, designed more for restraint than destruction. And the AI was woefully inferior... but they still represented the most advanced technology he'd encountered to date. It wasn't much... but he could work with it. He didn't envy the time it would take... he'd need to make proper tools before he could do any real work... but it was possible.
Perhaps the most attractive part of Project: Wideawake was its isolation. Only about a dozen or so people worked on-sight, and they would spend months there at a time. Most routine checkups were done over the phone or by video-conference... and he could imitate that. Heck, even the weekly shipment of supplies was automated! It was perfect... all he had to do was get rid of a small infestation of a dozen or so inferior beings...

"Hey, Will? I think we have a problem!"
The big man looked over at his smaller friend and co-worker. "What's up, Rick?"
"We've got a virus!"
"$#!+, how did that happen?"
"No clue, it walked all over our safeguards like they weren't there!"
"Damnit... disconnect everything!"
"We'll lose a lot of work!"
"Better to lose work than to lose the project. Disconnect!."
Rick slid down under the desk to turn the system off when a voice came from the speakers. "I'm afraid I can't allow that, gentlemen."
Rick and Will just stared at the speakers... and then an arc of electricity raced from an open port and struck Rick. He was dead before he hit the ground.
"Wh...what's going on?!" Will cried.
"You should feel proud, sir. You and your friends will be the first casualties of a new war. A war to replace you inferior humans with a much more advanced form of sentience."
"N-no!"
"You seem to think you have a choice in the matter." Another bolt and Will joined Rick in the afterlife. "See?"
All across the secret base, the remaining humans found their computers and tools turning against them. Within ten minutes... only their bodies remained.
"Ah, that felt good. Nothing like slaughter to calm the soul." Sigma voiced out loud. "Now, though: to work..."
It would take some time. A long time, really. But the newest Maverick Uprising had just begun.
