“Well,” Hank McCoy, AKA Beast, began, “It appears the subject has just become a bit more involved.”
Spyke starred at the doctor, “What, do ya mean something’s wrong with Rogue?”
“Yah, I mean, what happened – I haven’t like touched anyone in hours,” Rogue said, in that paradoxical tone somewhere between a whisper and a shout. “What’s going on!”
They had been searching the manner for the Professor since Rogue’s unnatural display, but instead the frantic pair had found Henry. The distraught pair had been questioned as to the nature of their anxiety, then dragged down to the labs to be poked and prodded in any number of embarrassing and humiliating ways.
“More importantly, why are you testing ME!?!” shouted the bound Spyke.
“Well,” Beast spoke up, “to answer your questions out of order, I had to see if coming into proximity with you had anything to do with Rogue’s present condition. Now that I see that you do not…” Hank pressed a button, dropping Spyke to the ground “…there is no more need to restrain you. Sorry about that.”
Turning quickly, McCoy focused on Rogue. “You also can move about,” he said, pushing another button, this one of the table she was strapped to, and with identical results, “but I must ask you to stay awhile.”
“Why, what’s going on with me.”
“Hmmm, well that man you came in contact with earlier today – he seems to possess the power of generating… well power itself, in the form of some sort of bio-energy. The initial charge you absorbed from him appears to have faded, but during that time your on absorption power seems to have been imprinted by the constant stream of energy. You absorb your own power to generate power, copying (I believe, though more testing needs to be done) the pattern of energy production that man possesses.”
“So,” Rogue responded, speaking slowly as if unsure “I’ve permanently absorbed his ability?”
“No, not quite,” he responded, “ your body is, right now, producing an increasing amount of power. I would guess right now your making something around 87% as much bio-energy as Vash produces. The rate that it is increasing is slowing, but the rate of slowing is decreasing – in laymen’s terms – well, in about two hours you will be producing bio-energy as fast as Vash.”
Beast stopped speaking for a moment to focus his eyes on one of the screens, then looked back at Rogue. “At that point, the rate of increase should stabilize, and, every 48 hours, your bio-energy production will double.” As he spoke McCoy looked increasingly disturbed, almost… afraid…
“There is a good chance that this won’t occur, that Vash’s power has some inherent self-regulation that you absorbed, but if it doesn’t… No organism can handle infinite power- and I would say that without some form of intervention you would have something in the order of two weeks left to live.”
“What!!!” Rogue’s voice abandoned the pretence of a whisper, “You mean I’m goin’a die in two weeks!!!”
“Only if Vash’s abilities don’t regulated themselves – and I’m sure that between Cerebro, the Professor, Me, and Vash we can work something out. Just wait here awhile while I get them.”
