However, had Ritsuko been operated on full steam perhaps she would have noticed the rather untidily replaced control console, sans the proper warning signs that that particular piece of equipment was being worked on. Actually, Mr. Gilbert had left to get said signs and simply assumed that nobody would use this equipment while he was gone.
After all, this particular vending machine was why out of the normal pathways. Nobody had been down this way in months, or at least it appeared that way. Still, somebody had noticed it, and somebody had complained to his boss that it needed fixing, and his boss had ordered him down here.
Which was why there was a plugged in, shoddily repatched vending machine that had accidentally been turned into what should have been a rather effective death trap.
Ritsuko frowned as she searched for Kaji and Mitsuko. The MAGI were narrowing down their list of suspects and she wanted them on hand for when these Orange Pattern-A's were identified. Her stomach growled in protest of the long day so far without food, having rushed out of her home a little behind schedule, and she spotted said death trap.
Grumbling slightly, out of fatigue mostly, Ritsuko reached into her pocket and grabbed some coins. Reaching out she moved to dump the coins into the machine and her fingers touched the metal.
In a bare instant, the darkened corner of the rarely traversed corridor was brightly lit by a veritable storm of electrical discharge centered around a decidedly terrified Ritsuko.
When it was all over, Ritsuko stood, breathing heavily, her hair sticking every which way, among a circle of charred metal walls as she stared at the roasted slag that had been a vending machine.
After several moments she swallowed heavily and stood up straight.
"Why am I not a smoking corpse?" she wondered idly.
"Awww!!" a voice declared. "I'd almost fixed that!"
As the nearly electrocuted woman turned to face him and he recognized, under the soot and electrically altered hairstyle, on of the more influential people in the compound. Suddenly he was thinking that he probably should have kept his mouth shut.
