“Vash, if you don’t drop them you wouldn’t make it!” exclaimed Barret.
“I’m not going to let anyone die!” exclaimed Vash, throwing on an extra burst of speed, and managed to catch up to the gun-armed black man.
“Help! I think my leg’s stuck.” exclaimed a voice from behind them. It was Jessie.
Vash looked at the leader of AVLANCHE. “Barret, take these two. I’ll help her.”
Barret scowled at Vash for a moment, the too the two Shinra guards. “I swear you’re going to make me soft.”
In a flash, Vash was running back into the reactor at blinding speed. With A loud squeal, he skid to a halt next to the girl.
Jessie looked at her watch, then at Vash. “You only have 20 seconds! Leave me and run! You don’t have time.”
Vash looked down at where her foot was stuck, then drew his weapon. He fired three shots, each hitting the floor panel in a spot that anchored it to the floor.
Jessie pulled her foot free and looked in some surprise. Two of those shots were aimed at spots mere millimeters from her leg and she was compliantly unscratched. She looked at her watch. “TEN SECOND! Were dea... ah!”
She cried out in surprise, and blushed like a school girl, as Vash pulled her off of her feet and started towards the exit, running at incredible speeds, carrying her in his arms.
The two of them made it out of the Mako reactor just in time for it to explode in a double stage blast. First was the bomb blast that consumed the reactor. The second was the detonation of all the materia within. All the materia were attack materia, so the result was pretty catastrophic.
Fires, Ices, Bolts, and many others, including one Ultima detonated in one flash. The plate shoot and the team was blown off their ass as they watched the fireworks show in front of them. As Vash and Jessie were the closest, they were hit the hardest, being catapulted into the security wall at incredible speeds. Luckily for Jessie, Vash placed himself in-between her and the wall, taking the brunt of the impact.
“Damn...” muttered Barret. “Didn’t think you’d make it.”
“I couldn’t have, if it wasn’t for Vash,” Jessie replied.
Vash groaned in response.
Jessie smiled at her rescuer and as a reward, she gave him a kiss on the forehead. “Thanks for the save, hero”
Vash blushed and bolted to his feet, in and embarrassed tone he managed to stammer, “It was the least I could do...”
Jessie smiled at Vash’s almost cute reaction while the three males behind her began to crack up.
“Hey, guys, take a look at this!” interjected Biggs as he pointed at the crater where the Mako reactor had been.
The Midgar plates were each over five meters thick, near solid steel. The points on the plates where reactors were mounted were further reinforced in order to handle the weight and stresses of operation. It was said that only Shinra’s Mako cannon could blow through them.
Where the reactor had stood there was just a massive hole in the plate. “Damn, didn’t think it would be that big...” muttered Barret.
Vash blinked. “You’ve never done this before?”
“Well, we’ve fought Shinra but this is our first Mako Reactor...”
Barret coughed to get attention. “People, we better get out of here before Shinra’s goons show up. Rendezvous at Sector 8 Station! Split up and get on the train!”
Vash nodded and ran off. After about two or three minutes he came to a realization. “I wonder... where is the Sector 8 Station?”
“Excuse me,” came a voice from behind him, “Would you like to buy some flowers?”
Vash turned around and smiled. “Hey, Pretty Flower Girl! Who’d imagine that I’d meet you here?”
The flower girl blushed at his compliment. “My name is Aeris. What’s yours?”
Vash smiled and gave her a bow. In a half serious, and all together dashing voice he said. “I am but a simple lover of peace who chases the mayfly known as love. You may call me, Vash the Stampede.”
Aeris smiled at his amusing introduction, “Well, it’s nice to meet you Vash the Stampede.”
“Say!” Vash exclaimed with a smile, “Have anymore flowers? I have gil this time!”
Aeris patted her basket. “Yes. One gil each!”
Vash blinked. “I thought it was 15 gil?”
Aeris shook her head. “I was selling Bouquets. Right now I only have a basket of singles.”
“I’ll take ‘em all!” exclaimed Vash.
Aeris blinked in surprise. “What? Are you serious?”
Vash smiled and nodded. “What’ll it be?”
“200 gil,” replied Aeris.
Vash smiled and handed her the money, then took the massive bouquet from her. “Thank you!”
“You’re welcome...” Aeris smiled. “So where are you headed?”
“Sector 8 train station...” Vash blushed and continued, “but I kind of lost…”
Aeris took Vash’s hand. “Here, I’ll walk you there...”
“HALT!”
Both of them turned around to greet an entire squad of Shinra guards.
“Step away from the girl! You are under arrest!”
