But as he decided to try and drop a hint that the other man should relax a little, the door opened and Chief Shigeru stepped inside with a young lady. She was definately a beautiful woman, but he didn't think that she was there to ask them out on any dates.
The head of the section, Kobayashi, came out from his office and walked over to greet the pair. "You're right on time sir."
Shigeru nodded and guided the young woman to stand in front of them. "Here she is."
"Here who is?" asked Sasaki.
Kobayashi turned to his detectives and looked at each one of them before continuing. "This is Officer Nabiki Tendo, and she has been transferred to this unit."
Bowing deeply to the assembled group, Tendo kept herself completely composed. "Officer Nabiki Tendo, late of the Traffic Division, reporting for duty."
Leaning back in his chair, Fujioka grinned. "So you're from traffic?"
"Yes, I was."
"Hey... I remember that name..," Kashû, one of the younger detectives commented. "Hey, aren't you the one who got the goods on that drug ring a little while back?"
"That she was," replied Shigeru.
"But I was only keeping track of the goings on during my beat. And when I saw that there was something there, I gave the information to my sargent."
"Twenty arrests because of her and she says that she was 'only'..," drawled Sasaki.
"And she managed to catch many shoplifters in the act during her work," Shigeru told them, "As she seems to have a talent for this sort of work, and the persistance, we thought it best if we transferred her here, to best use her talents."
'And it puts her under the eye of the more experienced officers,' thought Fujioka idly.
"Well then," the chief said, with a nod at those in the room, "I'll be going. Please help her learn all that she has to and to do a good job."
Once he left, Kashû's partner Tomoi grinned at the young woman. "And I know just how to do that. Once the shift is over, let's all go down to get some drinks at Yumi's."
"Only one," Nabiki told him, "I do have an date tonight."
"Damn. Who with?"
"My family. We're celebrating my transfer."
"Then let me show you around."
Letting the young detective show her around, Nabiki tried not to laugh at his rather heavy handed attempt to impress her. It was rather flattering to be honest, and she didn't feel like bursting his bubble.
But she couldn't help but feel like she had one of her own. What had started as a way to become able to get the work done that she had planned for so long had become something else. She found that she actually liked being a police officer. It wasn't something that she could easily define, but she did feel it.
Still, this was one more step closer to being able to her goal.
Kiima watched her husband train the three children and smiled. He was still the gruff, demanding and strong man that she had married, but raising the children had left its mark on him. Now he was more understanding, caring and better at moderating his words. Not that he had lost his edge at all, but it had added a new sharpness to it in regard to the tasks that he had undertaken.
At the same time, she wondered when Coriander had started to grow up. She was becoming quite a beauty even as she was still quite young. Her height had shot up and she showed great promise of looks to come, most of which she was certain would displease her husband. But she wasn't sure that the girl would notice, what with her dedication to the Art. In that way, she was definately showing herself to be her mother's child.
Her brother on the other hand continued to be a little scamp. Basil managed to get into trouble quite easily even now, but it was hard to stay angry with him for long. He did however have the talent that his parents had passed down, which did mean that he had whole different options open to him for mischief-making. Though she was certain that one day she would finally manage to curb that habit of his.
On the other hand, Hajime was well mannered, reserved, well behaved... and hopelessly hooked on Coriander. Whether it was as a friend, sister or as a 'crush' he thought of her, she didn't know, but what she did was that he was always looking out for her. He tended to stay around her, even in her foul moods, and didn't try to do anything. Still, he was a rather good student, both in the Art and otherwise.
"Kiima! It's time for your turn at teaching them!" Tarou called out.
"Coming!" she replied, and hurried over to them while:
