A ringing "I'm Home" indicated that their youngest sister had returned. Walking out to the verandah, she saw the spectacle of her father and sighed, smoothing out her school uniform. "That time of the year again?"
Her sisters nodded.
"I'll be sure to light incense for him, tonight."
Kasumi turned. "Tonight? Something going on?"
Akane nodded. "Yes. A purification. I might not be back until tomorrow, in fact."
"Then I guess you won't be eating here?"
Akane gave a quick hug to Kasumi. "Sorry, but no. Now I've got to go get ready." And with that, she left.
Nabiki just rolled her eyes. She still didn't understand how it happened, but she supposed she should just be grateful that it did.
For the longest time, Soun was planning on naming Akane his heir, but Akane had one major hindrance - a temper she just never controlled. No matter what any of them tried, Akane just seemed perpetually angry.
Finally, in an act of desperation, when Akane was thirteen, Soun took her to a Shinto shrine, to see if the local priest had any suggestions.
Akane ended up spending two weeks at the shrine. And when she came back, she not only had achieved control over her anger finally, but also came back with a sense of purpose.
Since then, Akane had focused on becoming a Shrine Maiden and Priestess, and less on the Art. (Although she still practiced. Soun wouldn't here of any of his girls giving up the Art.) She planned to take over the shrine once the priest - who had no other heirs himself - retired.
Nabiki didn't really believe any of that stuff. Or that Akane could really talk to spirits. Or any of that. But still, she thought as Akane, now dressed in a T-shirt and shorts and carrying her robes left the house, better to have a flaky, religious nut in the family than a bratty bitch.
