Genma glimpsed it as the portal opened.

R'yeleh. And at its center, Cthulhu woke.

Genma screamed, his mind shattered in an instant. He started clawing at his own eyes but never finished the gesture.

Cthulhu raged for a brief moment before the portal closed as Genma's life was no longer there to hold it open.

The park was gone. Azabu Juuban was gone. Tokyo was wiped from the map. In a single moment of searing agony, millions died and a raging torrent of energy wiped the bulk of the Japanese islands off the map.

Left were the most northernmost and southernmost of the areas, as the ball of energy continued onwards from Japan. It eventually stopped the swath of destruction simply because the Earth curved and its own path did not. Eventually it simply left the planet behind, a ravenous sphere that would fade out in the cold dark spaces between stars.

Nobody knew what had happened. No radiation. No missile launching. Nothing to indicate what had been unleashed in Japan. Eventually interest turned on to other things and tensions eased as it became obvious that this was not a new weapons system that anyone had added to their arsenal.

Theories were floated, the most widely accepted one being that a mini-black hole had begun evaporating after going through the Earth. While this was widely accepted, it was also widely disputed as there had been no sightings prior to the destruction of Japan.
