Elves also tended to be aloof around other species. There were, however, exceptions. Elven deities the same.
"Ranma Saotome?" Several eyestalks blinked. "Oh yes. Yes. I've heard of him."
Hanali wouldn't associate with this fellow, but not everyone was as concerned with physical beauty. Sehanine Moonbow, goddess of archery, appreciated the value of a good eye. Tennyson had a full twelve of them.
"I was hoping," said Sehanine, "for rather more detail."
"Ranma Saotome, chaos magnet, Nexus - meaning he's got a lot of timelines which center on him, he either wastes his life reacting to things and generally messing up the lives of those around him or he goes on to do something heroic." Tennyson was a god of the beholder race. Essentially globes with a central eye, a mouth, and a bunch of eyestalks that emitted all sorts of nasty magical beams. Tennyson was the beholder god of the philosophy of "live and let live" - his sect among the beholders had been known to unleash disintigration beams upon those who felt that wasn't an enlightened philosophy.
"What happened to him in timeline," Sehanine checked her notes, "RS-AD-6178?"
"Can't tell you," said the Beholder, who himself had a healthy respect for archers.
"The question is, will this youngling child be her Consort or her Champion or..." Sehanine's voice trailed off. There were a lot of possibilities there.
"He's a mammallian humanoid," pointed out Tennyson from the vantage point of being neither. "It's possible he could be both."
Sehanine nodded at that. The thought had occurred to her. "What else can you tell me of this 'Ranma Saotome'?"
"Raised by a human male parental unit, one who treats his child like a spawnling - unusual in mammals that don't have litters of dozens at a time. Uhm, let's see," said the beholder as he went to a file cabinet. "I've got a file from one of the more combatitive gods..."
"This one," said the elven goddess, snatching it from a stack on the table. "Hmmm."
Ranma Saotome, general data - mainline manifestation
Heir to the Saotome School Of Anything Goes Martial Arts, the style of freeform kempo with jiu jitsu borrowings that was first developed by the third son of Ryu Saitama - Happosai (see file Happosai). Anything Goes means just that and it is similar in some manner to the Cotton Fist or other "whatever it takes to win - do" philosophies such as the Sakikabara School Of Dirty Infighting. In the mainline he is taught several ridiculous to insane martial arts, including the Catfist and how to swim continental distances, learning nothing of how to actually make his own decisions or anything not directly involving martial arts, until introduced to one of his fiances (cf. Akane Tendo) where some measure of stability is finally given him. The two settle into a mutually abusive love/hate relationship for a little over a year, attempt to marry after Ranma kills a demigod, and finally do marry at the end of the second year. After six months and a fight that destroys the Tendo ancestral home, the two seperate only to reconcile and then seperate again in a series of more and more emotional disturbances particularly after the deaths or suicides of other fiancees belonging to Ranma, Akane, or (in at least one case) both.
It was due to the general unhappy nature of all and sundry participants that in timeline RS-AMG-10102 that one of the participants (see file Kasumi Tendo) prayed to any god listening that things could have gone better. An Elder god hearing this (see file Toltiir) began the Bet as a result.
It is generally recommended that one avoid coming anywhere near Nerima in a Ranma timeline as a result of these events and the Knight Of The True Continuua continuing to strike against non-mainlines of the RS hub.
On reading this Sehanine sent a copy to Hanali and a pair of others she thought would be interested. As for her, she had already decided to help the Dark Maiden's new student - in the role of:
