In the past, it had been Kaoru Kamiya, or Yahiko Myojin, who was the young martial artist practicing with their bokken in the hall. Despite his skill with the blade, or perhaps because of it, Kenshin had never been one to display his art in the same manner. He had usually kept to the housework such as cooking and taking care of the children.
Now it was Kenji, a shade of his parents' youth, running the katas during a peaceful moment within the empty dojo. Soon students would be arriving along with Master Myojin for the next round of classes, but until then, the dojo was his.
He remembered as a young child, as he practiced, that his mind would tend to drift into the realms of fantasy and he'd be in one of the battles he'd heard that his father had been in. (Battles he'd usually heard from Sagara-San rather than his father or mother, one must note.) A favorite enemy of his had always been the four women that had stolen now half-remembered playmates in some manner.
He finished with the kata he was currently running to note his father looking on with some hint of pride, the laundry basket sitting next to him.
"You do very well, yes you do," Kenshin said applaudingly.
Kenshin was still a very hale and strong man, though he was now entering the latter part of his life. And in fact, he still seemed a much younger person than he truly was. He somehow kept up with his martial skills, though Kenji wasn't certain he'd seen him practice ever.
"Thanks, dad," Kenji said.
"No thanks is necessary," Kenshin said. "It is the truth, you make for your mother a very fine student."
"Yeah, she said she's running out of things to teach me," he said.
"Then you will make your own techniques, yes you will," Kenshin said.
"I suppose so," he said, sighing.
It would do him no good to directly ask for the secrets of his father's style, he knew full well that the older man intended for that style to die with him.
The sound of the door chime came to their ears.
"Hmmm, we have company," Kenshin said, picking up the laundry and moving to deal with it before investigating the bell.
Kenji was not hampered by any such chores and moved right to the door to see his mother admitting...
