"Which first?" Daisuke said, his smile broadening into a leer. "So many girls to choose from, and they will all be mine, all of them."
"So pick one, but-"
"Do I have to? They're-"
"One change at a time, remember. You can't get every girl in school with just one-"
Hiroshi paused, looking thoughtful. "Actually, there might be a way."
"How?" Daisuke asked, leaning forwards. "Tell me."
"Mind reading. If you know what the girls are thinking ..."
Daisuke grinned. "I can give them exactly what they want, and make them mine. Do it."
"You've got to be more specific than that. Which girls? When? Where?"
"I want to know everything every girl is thinking."
"Every girl in the world? That could get-"
Daisuke scowled. "I didn't mean that. Um, can it do that?"
"I don't know, but it's still a computer, Dai. It's going to take us literally."
"OK," Daisuke said grudgingly. "You've made yourself smart. What should I ask for."
"Intelligence?" Hiroshi suggested, smiling. "I'm enjoying it."
He was too. He hadn't made himself a genius, or anything, everyone knew geniuses didn't get to have hot sex; he'd settled for just being bright, with a knack for using the Master PC, but even so, he could feel things unfolding inside his head, jigsaw pieces fitting into place in the puzzle that was life.
Everything that had once confused him now seemed so simple, so easily solved. With his new brains, all his problems would melt away, and the world would kneel before him.
"Hiroshi!" Daisuke shouted, hitting him on the shoulder.
Hiroshi blinked, remembering where he was. "What?"
"What were you laughing at?"
"I was laughing?"
"Yes," Daisuke said, shuddering. "You sounded like Kodachi."
"I get Nabiki's jokes now," Hiroshi bluffed. "All of them."
"Oh," Daisuke said. "How do I make the mind reading thing work."
Hiroshi thought a moment, then smiled.
"Daisuke will gain the ability to read the mind of any human female he looks at, and to turn this ability on and off as he chooses," Hiroshi said, typing the instructions into the computer. "OK?"
Daisuke nodded.
Hiroshi pressed the final button.
"I don't feel any different."
"There aren't any girls here. Um, you do remember what we just did, right?"
"Yes, yes," Daisuke said dismissively, "Let's go find some- What!"
"What?" Hiroshi asked, looking at his friend. Daisuke was staring at a porn mag, his eyes wide with shock. "Oh. Of course."
"I can here what she's thinking," Daisuke said. "I can hear what the cover girl's thinking."
"Anything good?" Hiroshi asked.
"No," Daisuke said. "She's making bread, but I can hear her, thinking about it."
"We know it works then," Hiroshi said, thinking about what had gone wrong. Maybe if they said living girls-
"No dead girls," he said quickly, stumbling over his words. "Look at any photos of dead girls and you might see into the next life. that's got to be dangerous."
"OK," Daisuke said, half listening as he leafed through the porn mag.
