In Nerima there were noises in the background you got used to when you grew up surrounded by them. Pumps off in the distance. The occasional train or car. Birds. Insects buzzing. Routine everyday noises.
Except Akane wasn't hearing them.
Really on edge now, Akane entered the house.
Again there were things that were "off" just going into the living room. Like someone had come in and redecorated without telling her. Except for the dust that had accumulated everywhere.
The same thing held true in the kitchen, but one thing immediately caused Akane to stop and stare at it. Kasumi kept a calendar next to the refrigerator. It was open to June, 1999.
Considering that Ranma had come to the Tendo house less than a year ago in March, 1991 - this concerned Akane just a bit. Had she lost eight...
Akane winced, remembering a class in which they'd learned of Western folktales. Particularly the case of Rip Van Winkle who went out bowling for a night to find that a quarter century had passed during that night in Elfland.
So she'd been gone a few hours and returned eight years later. It fit.
Phone was dead. No electricity. Gas lines had been shut off.
Checking Nabiki's and Kasumi's room showed signs of packing in a hurry. There were clothes lying rumpled on the floor that had been dropped and nobody had bothered to pick them up.
There were gadgets that Akane couldn't remember seeing before. Tiny phones that didn't have any wires. A microwave oven that was so small. Weird looking can openers. A computer in Nabiki's room?
Her own room bore similar signs and Akane was unsure of what that meant.
Finally she did hear a noise, the sound of an engine racing through the streets.
Akane quickly ran towards the noise, hoping to find out where everyone was. When she got to the intersection, she saw approaching at high speeds:
