Ranma-ryu: Uncertain engagement [Episode 72158]

by Kestral

It made absolutely no sense to Ranma.

He could remember showing up as a girl on a rainy day. "Let's be friends." "I'm glad you're not a boy." "Pervert! Peeping Tom!" and the day had gone even further downhill from there.

He could also remember showing up as a dragon on a rainy day. "It's a monster!" "Don't worry Kasumi, I'll protect... your teapot?! What does a dragon want with a teapot?!" "This bathwater is too cool, do you mind, Ranma-kun?" *FWOOOM!* "That's a little too hot."

With a girl curse, he'd been engaged to Akane right away because the two of them had started arguing. Somehow that had made them a "perfect couple" in the eyes of the two fathers.

With a dragon curse, he'd been engaged to Akane. Err. Kasumi. No, Nabiki! Well, we'll figure this out later. He couldn't speak in dragon form. Well, he was beginning to get the hang of it, but the mouth and tongue just weren't shaped well for Japanese. He had snarled and roared while draconish - but hadn't argued. Could that have been why?

The strangest thing about the changes with the Tendo household was that they'd learned quite quickly, that when Ranma was Ranma-ryu there were some basic things to remember. This had become widely circulated at school shortly after he'd started attending there too.

10 rules of living with a dragon.

  1. Do not disturb a sleeping dragon. If you have to, do it from way way over there away from the tail.
  2. Emotions run stronger in a dragon, they are elemental beings after all. Do not infuriate a red dragon unless you're fond of smelling like charcoal.
  3. If you think you might get airsick, do not ride a dragon.
  4. If you ride a dragon and do get airsick, absolutely positively do not get airsick on the dragon.
  5. Dragons have some catlike qualities such as taking naps, sharpening their claws, and eating stray animals that annoy them.
  6. Dragons can eat almost anything without harm. If you attempt to hit one with your bookbag, accept that it may eat your bookbag including the homework.
  7. As Akane can attest, trying to give the excuse that your dragon houseguest ate your homework is not going to score points with the teacher.
  8. Trying to get a dragon to go into the Nekoken is something to file under Very Very Bad Ideas.
  9. Fire breathing dragons can control their flame so as not to burn down buildings that they are in. Having fire extinguishers around until they learn how to do this is filed under Very Good If Belated Ideas.
  10. Catching a dragon by the tail means the end with all the teeth can reach you.
Ranma sneezed, but having control at this point only emitted a cloud of smoke and sparks.

"Oh, Saotome, there are some lemon bark strips by the backdoor," said Nabiki, not looking up from her manga.

Ranma nodded. Odd that wood chips would settle his stomach and leave his breath smelling better. Various citrus woods seemed to work best.

He was about ready to turn back when a detail from the altered past bubbled up. That was right, tonight he had to:
