Meanwhile, out of Ranma's hearing range...
"That wasn't bad but you really went out of character." said Nabiki. "You would never be that easily angered."
"True." replied Yumi, "But neither would you and you fell for my bit about the fat fool." Why waste an opportunity to discredit what Nabiki overheard? "Not even Tatewaki... well... maybe Tatewaki... but nobody else would be stupid enough to think that a fat, balding fool like him could ever have kids. I'm of the opinion that Ranma is adopted."
"Oh really?" asked Nabiki, "Then what was that when you two were alone?"
Yumi smiled, "Let's just say it's payback for the last time we crossed paths."
Nabiki looked interested. "When was this?" She asked.
"Before I was adopted by the Kunos, I asked him to train me. I had seen what he could do and for those brief few seconds before I talked to him, he actually looked like someone you could respect." lied Yumi, "The old fool refused to train me just because I was a girl. Too busy training his son to even try. After all, girls like us are useless anyway."
Nabiki chuckled at Yumi's last remark. She had always wondered about Yumi's past. She had assumed that Yumi has been a street urchin, living by her wits, but had never received any straight answers from Yumi herself. Now she decided to see whether what Yumi said was true. "I still don't understand why you chose to refer to your past and some nonexistent boy."
"If I can get the idiot to think that he's forgotten something as important as another son, maybe he'll have trouble concentrating on his training. If I know him as well as I think, he may even lose his edge long enough that even Akane... Unsubtle as she is... could get through his defenses and humiliate him." said Yumi confidently, "Perhaps we could even find some way to blackmail him into breaking Ranma's engagement to Akane. He's a lot dumber than he gives himself credit for."
"And how long do you think that this will take?" asked Nabiki, completely believing Yumi's story.
"I don't know exactly how long. Only that it will work eventually." replied Yumi, "I haven't seen him in years."
Just then, they arrived at the dinner table and all discussion was put on hold.
A few seconds later, Ranma arrived, still unaware of Yumi and Nabiki's "true natures".
(A.N.: After all, dear reader, if you had just arrived at the house in the last few days, you probably wouldn't know how smart and devious Nabiki was, or how she liked to engage in mental sparring either. This is especially true when you consider that I inteend to write this Ranma to be about as clueless as the original Ranma.)
(A.N.: When Nabiki said "I still don't understand why you chose to refer to your past and some nonexistent boy." my intent was to leave it obscure as to whether she thinks that Yumi was telling the truth about her past or whether she is just wondering about the "nonexistent" boy. It leaves more choice for future posts.)
(Author's Note of Credit: Thanks to goku for showing me a simple alternative to my overly complex and difficult idea for this episode.)
