"So what do you say?" Kaji said, looking totally unruffled, "We can all have lunch together."
"Misato and I are going to be busy, and probably won't have a lot of time you know," Shinji commented.
"Hey, I'm up for a bit of fast food."
"I get enough of that when it's Misato's night for getting dinner. Besides, I'm not sure that it would be very interesting."
The older man gave him a smirk. "Trust me kid, we can make it 'interesting'."
"But Misato said that she wanted to go without you."
"She always says that. And we usually get together anyway."
"Not for long. And I really want to get all this shopping over with."
"I could always help you pick out stuff, as another guy," the unshaven man told him.
"I..," the Third Child began before a ringing in his jacket interrupted him. "Have to get that."
"Go ahead," Kaji told him, obviously bemused as he glanced at the lavander haired woman while the younger male took the call. "Nice of you to let the kid handle the conversation."
"He's just trying to be nice," snapped Misato, "Unlike some people I could name."
"Ouch... That hurts."
"Don't I wish. Why don't you just breeze out of here like you came."
"And miss out on my chance to be with my favorite girl?"
"I'm not 'your' anything," she growled.
"Really?"
"Yes, really."
"Bet I can convince you otherwise."
That got a snort from the major. "I doubt that." 'Especially after what Shinji and I shared.'
"Come on now... The kid said that he didn't like shopping. So why don't you and I drop him off," Kaji purred as he leaned in close to her face, "And we can have a nice time, just the two of us."
"In your dreams, playboy. I have better things to do."
"Like what? Helping him pick out clothing?"
"Yes, that's one thing."
"He can do it himself. What else could keep you from my company?"
"She has to drive me to Headquarters," Shinji interrupted.
"Huh?" went both of the others.
"That was NERV on my cell. They want me to report in to Doctor Akagi for a check up."
"They do?" Misato asked with a bit of confusion.
"Yes, but I don't know why. I feel fine."
"It is not ours to judge why, but to follow orders," she said airly. "Sorry, but Shinji and I must go."
A twist of the lips kept the grin from coming across Kaji's mouth. "Maybe later."
"I doubt that. Come along Shinji."
"Right with you Misato," the Third Child replied, snagging their purchases and striding off behind her.
Leaving behind Kaji, who was shaking his head in slight mirth, while:
