But what really caught her attention was what Asuka wasn't saying outright.
The entire recitation of the previous day's events had been peppered liberally with various comments that she doubted that the redhead even realised that she was making, like not enjoying being surprised by Shinji 'even though he's now cute'. Another comment was to the effect that lots of girls were going to be bothering 'her' Shinji, even though she had been there first, even though she didn't care. And the statement about the 'tramps coming onto him just because they realised that he's cute' told a lot.
So much so that Hikari gave her friend a hesitant smile as the other girl stabbed her chopsticks into her bento. "Asuka?"
"What?" the redhead muttered.
"You like Shinji, don't you?"
Rice sprayed the area before them as the class representitive's words were heard. "WHAT?! Me like that wimpy, spineless little..."
"Boy who's now a hunk. And who you keep on complimenting?"
"When did I do that?!"
"Everytime you talk about the way he looks. And you keep talking about protecting 'your Shinji'."
Asuka scowled. "I have not!"
"Yes, you have. Several times in fact."
"Why would I like that pervert?"
"Because he's a sweet and sensitive guy, and not really a pervert? And because you've probably had your eye on him for a while?"
"Who?! Me?!"
"Hey, who's the one who's always been after him to get a spine? Who's paid more attention to him than any other boy in our class?"
"Pheh. They're just little kids. And he's just... a fellow pilot, that's all."
"Which is something that you can share," Hikari told her with a thoughtful look, "And now that I think about it, you've probably had your eye on him since before he changed."
"Yeah right..."
"I'm serious. You like him, as boy-girl liking, don't you?"
"Hah! I do not have the hots for him!"
"Do you?"
"Of course not," Asuka denied, "I mean, what would I want with a guy with a tight, well muscled, and handsome body who is still willing to make me lunch..."
The representitive just smiled.
"It doesn't prove anything."
"Okay then, I'll just go and see if any of the other girls might want to try. They've been scared off because they thought you were interested in him, but now..," the freckled girl said airily, "I'm sure that they'll jump at the chance to snatch him up, especially if he's a hunk..."
"Don't you dare!"
"Why not?"
"Because... because..."
"Because you like him, don't you?"
There was a moment that it looked like the redhead was going to protest, but she apparently noted that she was outmanuvered and she slumped. Going back to poking at her rice, she muttered, "It doesn't matter anyway. He's still probably a wimp."
"Hmmm... then you think that he might not make any moves?"
"Hah," Asuka said listlessly, "The moron wouldn't know how to make a move."
"Then we don't give him the chance!"
"Huh?"
"You move first."
"Are you saying..?"
"I definately am," Hikari told her, "If Shinji won't come to you, then we take you to Shinji!"
"We do?"
"It's for true love!" the brown haired girl declared with a giggle.
"I'm not sure I would go that far..."
"But it might be. And I'm going to help you find out if it is!"
"You are?"
"Uh-huh. I'll help you show Shinji that you want him, and together we'll do great! Soon, you'll have him as your boyfriend."
"I will?"
"You sure will! We'll just need a plan, and everything will fall into place from there!"
It took a moment's pondering, but a smile spread across Asuka's face. "Hey, you know something? I think that you may be right."
"Of course I am. And as your friend, I have to help you get your man."
"'My man'. I like the sound of that."
"Good. Now we just have to get down to planning."
"Let's!"
The two girls put their heads together and began working out possiblities while:
