"Ah, a newspaper!" said Nabiki as she spotted a machine that dispensed such.
"Wait a minute, why are all these clothes lying out on the street?" Akane asked of anyone who'd answer. "It's kind of like that 'Night Of The Comet' movie. Just empty clothes everywhere! No sign of the people!"
"What's this? Is this a joke? 'August 9, 2015'?" said Nabiki, then stopped. Slowly she started going through the rest of the paper.
Genma-panda spotted a jewelry store and went off to stuff his pockets. Only realizing when he got there that pandas don't have pockets.
Soun harrumphed. "This is ridiculous, isn't it Saotome? As soon as we get home, we'll throw that young woman out and -"
"Listen to her very carefully," interrupted Nabiki. "This doesn't look like a fake newspaper. We're in the future."
"That's what this watch says," said Akane holding up a ladies' watch that was still running. "I've checked four of them. They all read 'August 12, 2015.'"
Soun harrumphed again. Then he noticed what Genma was trying to do and decided to assist him. Nabiki joined them, but only half-heartedly stuffing a few of the choicer items into her pockets.
"It's so quiet, as if we're the only things left alive," noted Akane aloud. Akane had a love/hate relationship with horror movies. She hated those kind of things, but she watched a lot of them. This whole situation was beginning to fit into any number of those movies. If scabrous zombies began coming out of the sewers, it wouldn't have surprised her that much.
"Let's go, Saotome," said Tendo after filling a bag. "We'll just get on the train and head back to Nerima."
Nabiki looked up into the night sky and shuddered. There were some areas that had emergency lights but it was still eerily quiet. In Tokyo, one had the constant background noises common to a major city. The trains and traffic, the birds and bugs. Here there was nothing. The wind didn't even seem to want to disturb the silence.
