"All you can think of is stealing their cash?" Akane questioned, unbelieving.
"The dates are all within a few years of 2015," said Nabiki as she checked. "The oldest paper bill here has a year of 2007."
Akane swallowed nervously. At any moment the zombies were going to appear. "Oh, so that means - what?"
Nabiki didn't like it but the conclusion was becoming more obvious. "That genie did it. We're in the future. HER future."
Akane watched as Nabiki walked around to where the coffee dispensers were now blackened and cracked and a uniform was laying down on the floor next to a cup. "What are you doing?"
"There's some of that red goo that's in here." Nabiki sniffed and then tasted it with her tongue and then began spitting and hacking.
"That's pretty dangerous," began Akane.
"It's blood," said Nabiki before her eyes widened and she stared off into the distance.
"You're not turning into a zombie are you?" Akane asked.
"No," said Nabiki. "That orange stuff. It's just more of this but mixed with other things. It's literally a sea of blood."
Akane shuddered at the image. "Stop it, Nabiki."
"Kitano Masayuki," said Nabiki with her eyes closed. "Age seventeen. Worked at this Quick-run Mart for the past year. Graduate of Shiroyama High School. Lost his parents in Second Impact."
"What's Second Impact? Who's Masayuki Kitano?" asked Akane.
"That red fluid I spat up was Kitano-san," said Nabiki, closing her eyes and shuddering. "That's what that kid meant. No barriers. By tasting what he was turned into, I saw briefly into his life. I saw what he became. Merciless gods..."
"What are you talking about?" Akane asked.
"I know what that kid was talking about now," said Nabiki. "Everyone here was turned into this fluid. They've all mingled into the ocean now. An ocean of blood. Not only that but everyone who has ever been - they are all part of that ocean."
"Not zombies but they've been turned into blood?" asked Akane.
"Ridiculous," said Soun.
[Preposterous.] seconded Genma.
"Taste this," said Nabiki, holding the cup out in a trembling hand.
"Of course not," said Soun, pushing past his daughters. "We've got all we need, let's go now."
"Growf," agreed Genma-panda.
Akane followed them, with Nabiki slowly coming along behind the convenience store.
Akane eventually dropped back to walk alongside her sister. "What are you doing?"
To answer, Nabiki reached into a tire well of a car and removed a small apparently magnetic box and then removed a key from that box. She unlocked the car with the key, and quickly got in.
"Nabiki?" Akane asked, uncertain again.
"My feet hurt Akane, and I just got my first look into what the future holds," said Nabiki. "Let's pick those two idiots up and get going."
Other than a brief argument over who should drive, with Nabiki shocking her father into the back seat by calling him a few impolite and thoroughly disrespectful terms, the trip went fairly smoothly.
