Nine programs were joined by a belated tenth. This one was 'male' to the others despite none of them having a real gender. A common firewall and protection program became 'Mamoru' to the group.
Naru Osaka was visiting her boyfriend, a tech/student named Umino Garu, when the serpent of this happy time made herself known.
Having developed subordining programs of her own, Doctor Beryl Wiley released the hounds on the unsuspecting girls.
Jedite - a virus program was first. Rei combined forces with Usagi and Ami to locate him and purge his traces. While they were tracing the virus, Zoicite (a predator program) attacked from ambush.
After Zoicite came Nephrite. After Nephrite, Kunzite.
After Kunzite, Doctor Wiley decided to take matters into her own hands. She appropriated many of the designs that the AIs had come up with and fled the facility.
"She did WHAT?!" came the inevitable discovery.
Umino Garu pointed to the records. "She had clearance. She took the hardcopies and files home with her. We were all busy with damage control after those rogue programs started going after the AIs."
Kensuke Edo was a businessman with some grounding in science himself. He could look things over and see patterns, then respond accordingly. He saw this pattern immediately. Even at 3am on a Sunday. "Kazuko, call the police, inform them of this. Isako, check her last psych profile, it should be part of her annual review. Umino, continue monitoring the AIs and make fresh backups of whatever designs they come up with. This time make hardcopy backups too. Graham, check the film records, see if she did anything else."
"Already done," said the linebacker-looking scientist with a yawn. "Incendiary bomb. I defused it last night after the alarms went off. Sorry I didn't mention it, a bit tired."
"Understandable, you've been double-shifting a lot," agreed Kensuke. "Get some sleep. The police will probably want your input and best if you get rested before then. Can we figure out what she took?"
"Robotics designs and manufacturing processes," said Umino.
"Probably sell them to rival companies," growled Kensuke. "At least the AI are okay and when she goes public we can respond then. Check the offsite backups and see if we've got that data. I'll be in my office checking contacts."
