Choosing which spell to try out had been difficult but not nearly so difficult as the spell itself. Now that it was done, Ranma sagged as he felt the accumulated fatigue come sweeping in.
"Master?" the voice was soft and uncertain.
"Gimmee a minute, will ya?" Ranma asked of his conjuration. At several points the high level incantation had seemed to twist and fight back against him. While all magic had tired him this one had actually been a struggle and then some.
"Yes, master," came the soft reply.
Ranma took a good look at what he had just managed now. Conjuring up sylphs was fairly common within wizardry, but Ranma hadn't had a good idea of what exactly a sylph was. From the description he'd heard, sort of a magical housekeeper was his interpretation.
Unfortunately, somehow or other, Ranma realized that trying to picture what he'd be getting had ended up influencing the final result. He'd pictured an summoned spirit in an artificial body based on things he'd seen or read in Japan and had ended up with exactly what he'd pictured before him.
The spirit that looked like Rei Ayanami in a maid outfit seemed to be inspecting the house as if she had never seen one before. Even the voice matched.
"So, uhm, what do I call you?" Ranma asked. "None of that stuff was written in the book. It just told me how to summon a sylph."
"Am sylph," said the sylph, uncertainly trying the word out.
"Yeah, but that's what ya are, it ain't a name," said Ranma.
The sylph cocked her head at him, clearly not understanding.
"How about I call you 'Rei' since I summoned you," said Ranma.
"What is Rei?" Rei asked.
"No, it's your name. You're a sylph, but you individually are 'Rei' - ya got it?" asked Ranma.
Rei blinked at him, considering. Then she pointed. "Rei."
"Uhm, no. That's a box."
"Rei?" Rei pointed at a hanging coil of rope.
"No, that's a rope. You're Rei, a sylph." Ranma worried his lip. Was there a spell for increasing intelligence in a sylph? Maybe one of those times the spell had seemed to get out of control, he hadn't gotten it right after all.
Rei cocked her head again, something in the manner of it reminding Ranma of a bird. "Understand? Yes. Rei am Rei. Rei am sylph. What do you want of Rei?"
"Uhm, can ya tidy it up in here? Dust the place, straighten things up?" tried Ranma.
"Rei no understand," confessed Rei.
"I have a feeling this is gonna take me awhile," said Ranma.
