It also raised a very unpleasant possibility.
Misato had come not from an alternate universe, but their own future.
They had been remembered but had not survived.
The two fathers had apparently survived Second Impact, when Antarctica had vanished in a fireball of destruction. A really harsh long winter, plagues, a vast amount of water being poisoned, lines of trade and communication failing. If people had pulled together, it would have been a hard time but not a complete disaster. That had happened in a few places but those were the exceptions.
Most areas had suffered even worse due to rioting, looting, and the breakdown of local law enforcement in the face of the disaster.
After the disaster and tidal waves, Nerima had been underwater.
Ranma and the two fathers had survived only to find something fundamental in the world had changed. Their curses had locked during Second Impact and there was no going to Jusenkyo in the years following the disaster to try and find some method of unlocking them.
It wasn't until much later that it had been found that Nabiki had somehow survived Second Impact only to die from one of the plagues. During one of the food riots, a panda acting the glutton was seen as a food source. By the time Ranma and Soun learned of Genma's actions at a seperate camp and reacted, the "mad beast" had been brought down and eaten.
Few pets had survived in Japan or most of the world. Many had simply dropped dead or appeared to go crazy at the moment of Second Impact - the result of warped magnetic fields according to one yellowed newspaper article. Many animal species had likewise become extinct. Most of those at that camp had begrudged all the food that had gone to keeping that panda plump.
The home and dojo was rebuilt on land that had been flattened by one of the earthquakes or a tsunami. Both had gone through this area apparently.
The world picked itself up and continued on. Soun Tendo died in 2009 when he'd tried to use a fork to get toast out of a broken toaster. That he had died from such a stupid manuever after surviving so much was duly noted by the obituary writer.
Nabiki looked to the two scoffing parents and Akane. "Let's review. Akane and I both die in 1999, myself from a plague and Akane from drowning. Kasumi is also dead. Mister Saotome gets eaten, Daddy gets electrocuted."
"Preposterous," declared Soun, ripping up the offending obituary. "I'd just have Kasumi fix the toaster. You know I'm no good in the kitchen."
"Except that Kasumi is missing and quite probably dead," pointed out Nabiki. "Oh this is interesting!"
"Does it explain who all these girls are?" Akane asked, pointing at the photos.
"Ranma was locked in girl form and mainly alone. Apparently he opened his dojo and made the house into a boarding home for young girls who had been orphaned. Daddy didn't like the idea but didn't protest it. Apparently the clothes are from one of the older girls. That's who all those girls in the picture are." Nabiki looked over the group photo again, showing a badly aged Soun leaning on a cane, older Ranma-chan in modest attire, and seven younger girls gathered around them.
Swallowing nervously, Nabiki checked-
