Which is why she was surprised to see Commander Ikari and her assistant, Maya Ibuki, walk by her desk, talking to one another.
Okay, I think I've just seen something even more strange, Ritsuko thought as she listened in on their conversation.
"You remember what we talked about last night?" Gendo asked icily.
"Of course, Commander," was Maya's equally cool response.
They talked last night? Ritsuko thought as she pushed her rolling chair back, getting a good look at the two from behind. Maya was looking up at Commander Ikari intently, absorbing everything he was talking to her about as he looked down at her.
"Let's review. The first thing is to ascertain whether those spies you were talking about are working of their own will." Gendo looked over his shoulder, noticing Ritsuko looking at the two of them.
"And if they are?" Maya asked, having not looked over at what Gendo was viewing.
"Then deal with them using your... Abilities." With that, the Commander looked back at Maya and the two of them walked along, eventually moving out of earshot.
Ritsuko pushed herself back into her desk and sighed softly, then closed her eyes and concentrated, trying to contact the Magi.
Melchior? Ritsuko called out telepathically.
Yes, Ritsuko? Melchior responded.
I need you to bring up the security camera records for last night. Look for anything between Commander Ikari and Lieutenant Ibuki, and bring it to me.
OK, Ritsuko! I'll have it ready within the hour! Ritsuko sighed as she severed the mental connection to Melchior, wiping her brow as she did. If Commander Ikari had even a slight idea that she and Misato were plotting against him, it couldn't end well. Fuck, how am I supposed to handle this? she thought, her cool demeanor faltering as she struggled to stay seated. And what does Maya have to do with anything!? Ritsuko weighed her options carefully. What would be the best course of action?
