"Misato," Ritsuko whispered into the genie's ear, "we need to talk. Now."
Misato looked over her shoulder at the faux blonde and nodded, a look of slight worry on her face. "OK, lead the way," she said as she turned to face Ritsuko.
Ritsuko lead Misato back to her office and looked out the door, making sure no one was coming by. She then locked the door and walked up to Misato, speaking in hushed tones. "I think Gendo's suspecting something," she told her friend, her voice tense at that.
"You sure!?" Misato struggled to keep her voice from going above a whisper, but it was hard from how shocked she was at that moment. "How could he possibly know!?"
"I'm having Melchior look into that now," Ritsuko replied, wiping the sweat from her brow. "I saw him and Maya talking about some sort of 'spy' or something like that. It's very likely he means us."
Misato cursed strongly under her breath, then nodded slowly. "Looks like I picked the wrong time to quit drinking," Misato chided herself, sighing as she did.
"Not like you were entirely responsible for that," Ritsuko quipped, smiling despite herself.
"Actually," Misato retorted with a smile as she whispered into Ritsuko's ear, "Master released me from that restriction, but I stay away from beer anyway." (Note: see Ep 94950).
Ritsuko blinked a few times. Surely this wasn't the Misato she knew! Perhaps the influence of being a genie made her more attuned to her Master's desires even if he didn't wish for them. Whatever the reason, Ritsuko still couldn't quite wrap her mind around the concept of a Misato Katsuragi who didn't want to drink beer.
Clearing her throat, Ritsuko returned her thoughts to more pressing matters. "Look, I know that Gendo knows something, and that Maya at the very least knows a little of what Gendo does. There must be some reason they're together." Ritsuko let out a soft sigh and pursed her lips. She didn't like the idea that she couldn't trust her most faithful assistant, but the image of her in close confidence with the Commander was too firm in her mind for her to hold on to naive assumptions. "Keep an eye out, Okay?"
"Okay, I'll do that," assured Misato. "I'll be sure to tell Master and the others."
Ritsuko gave a silent, affirming nod, and the Major left the office. Well, Ritsuko thought, that takes care of that at least. Now what?
