Rifted Ranma: A Valkyrie By Any Other Name [Episode 99103]

by Kestral

Ranma settled down into the cockpit and brought up systems while listening to the voice of Tessa on the bridge. Weather patterns could change without much warning, but right now they were over Texas badlands that had pretty good visibility.

Ranma launched and pulled the switch that shifted his vehicle from Fighter to Gerwalk. Slower, but a heck of a lot more manueverable.

The Tuatha De Danaan dropped away beneath him as he soared up, extending his biomech parts to link directly with the ship.

Then he WAS the Valkyrie. He could feel the wind sluicing past him as he idly changed to Fighter mode again in order to increase his speed and flight ceiling further. Ah. Much better. Here you could get a much better view and send the data back through a laser link to the much slower Tuatha.

"Wild Horse this is Tuatha. Correct course NNE twelve degrees."

Ranma did so idly, frowning at his groove being jeapordized even this much. This was an aspect of the Art after all.

Goodbyes had been said, and she was now alone as far as the little group that had landed in post-Rifts Kansas.

Yuka and Sayuri were aboard the Trader Vic, one of the big transport/haulers operated by Jabberworks Corp. Essentially a mobile village. Yuka's bionic arm allowed her to interface with a "Crab" style scavenger vehicle, while Sayuri was apparently working in the Housekeeping department.

Ukyo was off on a similar vehicle called the Southern Cross which was heading for South America. The death of Ranma had left her almost a zombie, and she wanted to put some distance between herself and the others now.

Ryoga/P-Chan was off wandering around. Last she'd seen of him, he'd managed to get ahold of one of the fully environmental armored craft and had reduced his time being cursed drastically.

Akane had sent a computer message from her own Jabberworks caravanserie - the Yellow Rose which was apparently in New Mexico selling anti-vampire equipment.

Nabiki sat back and looked at the photos accompanying the letter. Akane looked as if she was coping. The blurry photo of Akane using a TW purification gun on a vampire was intriguing. So vampires, like dragons and magic and psychics, were real here.

Nabiki found herself oddly melancholic and tried to come up with a reply.

Dear Akane:

It's nice to see you fitting in with your current crowd.

I was working a gambling table here briefly, but I was caught changed to more legally acceptable employment within a few days. I'm now working at "McLeod's Grocery" and have a fairly cheap apartment not far from work.

There isn't much going on here. Mainly I get to recharge E-Clips and sell fruits and vegetables. There are the usual goings-on around me. One right nasty fellow named Gary keeps coming by and using ethnic slurs and going on in passive-aggressive fashion. Might be a drug addict, he's a nurse and I understand the profession has a large number of such amongst them. More annoying than anything else.

There are a lot of refugees from the Tolkeen Wars coming through here. Most seem to have a little of their original possessions, some have only what clothes and armor they were wearing. I'm told local crime rates have gone up as a result. Desperation can make people dangerous.

The weather is fairly hot and muggy right now. Bugs aren't too much of a problem, there's a cheap gadget that uses some sort of ultrasonic field to ward the critters off. If we ever get out of here, we'll have to bring a few of these along so that we can make a fortune.

I'm considering getting a bionic wireless jack installed. It would be convenient at work.

I've also arranged to spend some time at a firing range. Lots of people have at least a light laser pistol, and if I have to leave town in a hurry things don't work out here I have something to fend off some of these supernatural predators I've heard so much about.

That's all for now. I have to keep my expenses limited.

Nabiki.

Nabiki checked and the Yellow Rose was supposed to go through the Scottsdale Forest in a few days. Just enough time for her to send the message to there where Akane could get it.
