After they had left Akane turned on her sister, “Nabiki, what did you stop me for? I was about to..”
“Make a mess of things. I was handling everything just fine until you butted in.”
“Just fine? Are you saying you actually believe those lies Ranma was trying to feed us?”
“I don't know what to believe at this point, little sis.”
“Oh please. That jerk tried to deny he even had a daughter until confronted with her. Now he had all night to think up his lame excuses AND he had the gall to go telling her that I'm going to be her mother! When was I supposed to find out about this, after we got married?”
“You didn't see Ranma this morning Akane. Something is going on..”
“I'll tell you exactly what is going on. That two-timing pervert went and had a kid with someone else and now he wants me to raise her. I'm not even married yet and I'm not going to raise some kid who..”
“THAT”S ENOUGH!” Everyone turned to look in shock at Soun, except for Genma who nonchalantly finished everyone's breakfast. Soun leveled a stern gaze at his daughters, “That little girl is the child of Ranma and Akane. I will hear no more of this. Is this clear?” Soun focused on Nabiki, who hesitantly nodded. When he shifted his gaze to Akane, she glared back at him. “Is this clear?” he repeated. After another long moment of matching wills Akane spat out, “Fine,” and stomped up to her room. As her door slammed shut Soun visibly deflated, drained from even such a minor exertion of his will. He rose form the table and headed outside, taking the shogi table with him.
Nabiki tracked him as he went and then turned to Genma, “What about you, Mr. Saotome? You were just as lost as the rest of us last night. Do you believe that Ranko really is your granddaughter?”
Genma stood up slowly, the morning light glinting off his glasses as he took on an unusually solemn mien. “If your father says that Ranko is of my flesh and blood, then she is of my flesh and blood. He was always better than I was at that.” With that cryptic pronouncement he left an even more puzzled Nabiki behind as he headed out to join his old training partner.
