There were other cases, where an invention was just missed by one person - only to be worked out later by someone else going over the same research. Refinement of germ theory and the development of influenza vaccines would be an example of this.

Then there were the far rarer cases of true genius where someone worked out how something could be before the materials technology or manufacturing capability was able to apply that knowledge. Some of Da Vinci's concepts like the hang glider fell into that category.

Five year old Ranma and his father were now in another universe, and this universe was:

• one in which a modern or future time traveler had travelled back into the past and gotten stranded there.
• one in which a Greek or Roman had actually worked out the basics of something more advanced.
• one in which extraterrestrial contact had been made centuries ago.
• one in which the Moon Kingdom vs Earth Kingdom conflict had been averted.
• one where the scientific principle had been worked out by an early society, and where advances had flourished.
• something else
