As she heard the sound of running feet and a voice yelping out incoherent words, the middle Tendo daughter was reminded that her friend wasn't exactly the sort of person that she would describe in that way.
*"HI!"* came the bright, cheerful, and out of breath voice over the phone.
Giving much the same flat look that she would if the girl was in front of her, Nabiki answered. "You know, I wasn't going anywhere. Which means that you could have taken your time in answering the phone, Usagi."
*"Heh heh.... I didn't try to rush so much. It was just that when I heard that you were on the phone, I really wanted to answer it."*
"You know, if you're trying to flatter me...."
*"I really meant it,"* Usagi blurted, seeming to be afraid of being misunderstood.
"It worked."
*"But I.... It did?"
"You could say that. Man, you really know how to make friends with people," the elder girl, unable to keep her affection out of her voice.
*"I don't know about all that...."*
"I do. Trust me, you have it."
*Well, I just try to be nice to people. Is that supposed to be bad?"*
"Not the way that you do it," Nabiki chuckled, yet was totally serious. While she might have been able to talk rings around a lot of people, she never had the blonde's ability to connect with others. If she just dropped her friend into a room full of angry and stiff necked corporate types, she could come back and find that the girl had gotten them to, at the very least, be companionable towards her, if not out and out friendly.
It was one of the things that had the Tendo girl rather protective of her friend. Even if she was something of a cynic, she saw something special in that fragile girl with the blue eyes, something that was worth preserving, and being around. Having the feeling that she could be something better herself was rather... new to her, even after all this time, but it just seemed to be something that came from being around the girl with the odd hair.
Still, there was something that she had to bring up. "And just so that you know, there is a reason for me calling."
*"What?"* Usagi murmured, seeming to be rather surprised. *"You didn't want to just say 'hi'?"
"Much as that sounds like a ton of fun.... I called to let you know that Ranma is not only coming back to Tokyo, but that his father is bringing him back to my house."
For the first time in her life, Usagi was left unable to think of something to say. That was unusual due to the fact that she at least was able to make sounds of frustration, even if she couldn't come up with complete words. Yet, now she couldn't even make herself take a breath.
What she'd heard was so important to her that she was left floored, and she hadn't expected to hear it like this. Oh, she'd been certain that she'd hear that her husband had returned sooner or later, as she believed in him completely, but the fact was that she also had thought that he'd have come to her on his own. Of course, from what she knew of his dad, it was entirely likely that he'd drag Ranma off to a place simply because he felt like it.
She usually tried to be nice to everyone that she met, but he was someone that she had an odd urge to smack from time to time.
But in any case, there was a happiness in her heart that was growing, and she didn't want it to stop. The boy that she loved was returning to her, and her joy over that fact was so big that she was about ready to burst. It was like someone had decided to make her version of a picture perfect Christmas, just to see her smile. And she could feel the tears of happiness threatening to trickle down her cheeks as she considered how they would be back together again.
Theirs was a solid love, and she had known that nothing would break it, as:
