They'd chosen the name Ranma Saotome because in their native language, the term "ranmasaotome" actually translated as "stud boy with the sexual endurance of a god" - and having determined there was in fact someone with a name like that - they were pretty damn curious.
Not that any of them were interested in personally testing it out, they weren't bestialists who found hairless flat-faced ape descendents attractive. Upon finding out that this hairless flat-faced ape descendent changed genders based on the temperature of water applied to his epidermal layer? Revolting! Disgusting! Especially as their species had very distinct gender roles and physiologies that bore that out. In their society, females did all the heavy work because they were bigger and heavier and roughly averaged about fifty IQ points lower than males. The idea of a male to a female to a male? It had the same fascination as a violent train accident. Nothing you wanted to go through yourself, but interesting.
The Shepherds also had a distinct desire to meddle.
Ranma would have been a lot happier with the situation if he knew that they were planning on analyzing and then curing his curse.
