Mischief Fragment: Element = Holy [Episode 220978]

by Kestral

Dear Diary,
It was quite an eventful day yesterday, and it took me all day today to really come to grips with it.

Normal classes. Mizuki-sensei was dealing with the way that the Ninetails had devastated the village and killed so many people back about the time I was born. He seems to bring this up on a regular basis. I wonder what role he played in those events, which he never mentions.

After classes yesterday, there was kunai and general weapons practice. Sasuke was going to be using his Fireball Jutsu, which was something we were all looking forward to seeing.

Except he caught me on fire.

I felt the fire. It clinged on to me. It spread. It hurt. I should have died.

Iruka-sensei put the flames out, but I was apparently going into shock at that point. I overheard the medic-nin. I could have died before they got to me. They can't fix everything, though sometimes it seems like they can.

Naruto saved me. Naruto. The class clown. The guy who can't get anything right. He touched me and the pain stopped.

Well, more than stopped. It was like being wrapped in joy or something.

So I did some snooping while I was at the hospital. It's normal and expected of us - we're kunoichi after all. We just have to be so good we don't get caught.

Naruto apparently has something sealed inside him, according to the medic-nin. That something is destructive and mischievous, or kind and healing, and the thought of the medic-nin was that it depends on how Naruto feels about others. The good side or the bad side could come out.

When I heard that, I had a lot to think about. Me and the others, everyone else just about, haven't exactly been nice to Naruto. But he still healed me. He could have let me burn. I might have left him to burn if it had been turned around.

I felt pretty sick about it when I realized that.

Sasuke has always been cool but he's never done anything for the girls around him. I don't think he's gay like someone once said. On the other hand, Naruto has always been this clown who doesn't do so good in tests and stuff. And he healed me. With these big white wings that came out of him.

I guess I still like Sasuke, who is still cool. But maybe Naruto is a little bit cool too. Just in a different way. When he's not being an idiot.

We're already eleven, so we got to be more mature than when we were kids about this stuff.

- Ino Yamanaka

Sakura considered things as she tossed kunai into the target, stopped to pull them out, then go back to the block to start the process over again.

Sasuke had been perfect. Up until Ino had caught on fire.

Ino had been less than a few feet away from her. Just a little closer and it might have been her. Then Sasuke sneezed and things had been a little less than perfect.

Oh, ancestors, the smell! Nobody ever mentioned how human skin and hair smelled when they were burning. Ino had started screaming and then stopped, but it had stopped when she had INHALED fire.

Ino had once been her friend. They weren't as friendly any more because they both wanted Sasuke, but Sakura had never wanted Ino dead. Certainly never dead like THAT. Crushed, humiliated, and recognizing that Sakura was the better match for Sasuke. There had been moments where she'd wanted that.

Ino hadn't been too conscious of the whole thing but Sakura had seen the damage. She'd been sure Ino Yamanaka had been dead.

Then Naruto healed her. Brought her back. Ino's clothing had still been burned, but Ino herself had no burns. Even her hair had been grown back.

Sakura finished throwing another set and realized how relieved she'd been. Ino was once her precious friend, even if neither of them would admit it aloud. Sakura knew because of what she'd gone through that she still cared about the friend who Ino had once been. Maybe, after their rivalry was finished, they could be friends again.

There was also Naruto to consider. Someone who could heal. The clown had revealed that he could do more than just clown around.

Something more had changed, though it wasn't until AFTER that that she had noticed. Before, he'd followed her with his eyes. Always smiling and saying hello and getting in the way of her when she was trying to get close to Sasuke.

How long had he NOT been doing it? Two days? More? She hadn't really noticed and now this bothered her. She'd noticed this morning when his eyes swept past her, and then class began as normal. Like he had barely noticed her and was looking for someone else. Not Ino, Ino was still out in the hospital.

Come to think of it, didn't Hinata always watch Naruto for some weird reason? Hinata had been gone for awhile with some family training thing. Maybe she could ask Hinata when the quiet girl got back, maybe she'd know.
