"Team Seven. Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, and Sasuke Uchiha."
Some things differed.
"It's weird seeing YOU reading a book. Hope it's got a lot of pictures."
"Hmmm? Did you say something, Sakura-chan?"
"Idiot."
"Sorry, I was concentrating on this. It's a book on fuuinjutsu, apparently it was a set of scrolls by someone named Mito Uzumaki and it was copied off into a book by someone named April Faux. It's just... this doesn't LOOK right."
"What? A relative of yours? Honestly Naruto, they were probably as hopeless as you are!"
Sasuke let out a deep breath. Honestly, how was he to get any decent brooding going around here?
Sakura practically sparkled as Sasuke's unattainable coolness drew her in again.
"Maybe..." Naruto got up and went to the chalkboard, fished out a piece of chalk and began marking the floor with frequent looks back at the open book.
"You're going to get in trouble," said Sakura as she watched squiggles being added. "What is..."
Sasuke had gotten up and moved to get a better look. It was a lot more complicated than he would have expected from Naruto. He checked the book that Naruto was consulting and immediately noted that some section wasn't quite duplicated. "That's wrong."
"Yeah, I know," said Naruto, clearly distracted. "That's part of what doesn't look right. This looks better here with the loop closed and the branch linked to the area description tag."
Sakura blinked and began to look closer herself. "This... makes sense to you?"
"Yeah, kinda," admitted Naruto. "This is supposed to flow, I think. So if I link it like so. Maybe."
Sakura watched the thing taking form and glanced at the book and then back. "This is way too high level. You ought to check with our sensei when he shows up. You can't do high level stuff like this unsupervised you know."
"I left one link open, it won't activate," said Naruto, frowning as he squatted and examined the complex set of glyphs, then got up to squat down elsewhere and then examine from that angle as well.
Sakura glanced at her crush, realized that NARUTO was getting more attention than she was - and this had to be stopped right now. "This is too complicated for you, Naruto. Let me see that book."
"No, it's my book," said Naruto, interpreting that look she'd given Sasuke to mean that Sakura would take his new book away and give it to Sasuke. It was always about Sasuke, damn it!
"Hand it over, Naruto," said Sakura, stepping forward and grabbing it. "You're so pathetic, you're going to mess something up!"
"It's my book damnit! You're not giving it to Sasuke!"
"Let go before you do something lame!"
Sasuke watched the two squabbling over the book before deciding that they were both morons.
"I SAID LET GO!" said Sakura, using the hand not tugging at the book to punch Naruto in the face.
Sasuke saw it, the world going in slow motion for a moment. It was almost as if his Sharingan had activated in fact. He saw the tumbling ball of blood and spittle from Naruto's face as the boy fell backwards. He saw the triumphant look on Sakura's face as she pulled the book closer. He saw the blood-spit glob hit a section of the fuuinjutsu.
Which lit up in purple fire.
"Ugh!" went Naruto as he hit the ground.
"Yes!" proclaimed Sakura.
"Oh shit," uncharacteristically said Sasuke.
The world dissolved in purple fire.
"What?!" yelped Sakura.
"HEY!" yelled Naruto.
"Damn fangirls," grumbled Sasuke, watching his words appear as yellow glyphs that changed to birds flying away which tasted of sunshine and shadow. He smelled the yellow warmth and heard the flavor of pork bone ramen.
Naruto ducked under the desk flying by, got beaned in the face by a dusty eraser that smelled of blue, and wondered what the hell was going on.
Sakura dropped the book when it tried to bite her, watched her left arm flying off into the sunset, and wondered why she was smelling discordance. Also, where did that towel come from?
Then things settled down, except they weren't where they had been a minute ago.
Kakashi stiffened as a presence behind him appeared. "Hokage-sama?"
"You were supposed to meet your genin-candidates an hour ago, Kakashi," said the Hokage. "Did you happen to hear something like an explosion?"
"'Explosion'?" asked Kakashi.
"The classroom they were waiting in is gone," said the Hokage. "I want to see you at 1600 hours in my office. Don't be late."
"'Gone'?" asked Kakashi Hatake.
"Yes, gone," said the Hokage. "By 1600 I should have a few answers as to what happened."
Naruto shook his head. One minute he was seeing sour and hearing green, and now he was trying not to throw up while resting on his hands and knees.
"Sakura," croaked Sasuke. "Never do that again. Ever."
"Gkkk," managed Sakura, trying not to throw up herself.
Naruto blinked and brought his head up, trying to bring the world into focus. One thing was clear - they were no longer in the classroom at the Academy.
Instead they were:
