Zolf took off at a brisk pace to make it to Slow River, to identify the names on his master's hit list.
At least, that's what he seemed to be doing. Once out of sight of Vega's encampment, Zolf took out something Vega didn't know he had.
Zolf didn't know how the small black box worked, of course. All he new was that if he slid the little black lever this way, he could receive messages from other such boxes, and if he pressed the red button down he could send messages...
And, of course, pressing the green button meant that only the other box held by his true master would hear his voice. Oh, to be away from that... beast playing at being a man, and back with Master Zelgadis! Zelgadis might look like a monster, he might even present himself as one... but he had more basic humanity in his fingers than that psychopath Vega ever possessed.
"Master Zelgadis? I am here. Over."
The voice of his master returned to him moments later. "What's the situation? Over."
"Vega's received orders to attack one more time, and to use that as a cover to assassinate several of the townsfolk. I'm to go ID them for him, now. Over."
There was a pause.
"Did you learn who gave the order? Over."
"I've confirmed it. They come from Rei... which means from Gendo. Over."
"Damn. What is that son of a bitch planning now?" Zelgadis said out loud.
When he didn't continue for a few minutes, Zolf decided to speak. "Whatever it is, we can be sure it ultimately means more power going to Gendo. Over."
"Which is never a good thing." Another pause. "I'm pulling you out, Zolf. Over."
"Sir? Are you sure that's wise? If I don't show back up, Vega will come after me. Over."
"There is more going on than you are aware of. As usual, Gendo's playing with several layers of intrigue. Some of what I've got tells me that Vega will have other, more pressing concerns than hunting down a member of his band that vanished. Rodimus will meet you at Skor Rock. Over."
"Uderstood sir. Over." Zolf put the black box away and altered his course. He thought for a moment about the coming battle... then shrugged.
It wasn't his concern anymore.
