Elfguest: Akane Dies. Do not pass go. Pay the nice Reaper with the Scythe on your way down. [Episode 73971]

She had seen Kodachi and Genma both benefit from the deck and figured that anything *those* two could use, obviously she could gain as well.

But as any party of adventurers could tell you, the Deck of Many Things was both coveted and FEARED for a reason. Because just as the rewards were great, so were the dangers.

A grinning white skull stared back at Akane from the card. Two red glowing sparks burned where the eyes should be. The youngest Tendo had barely a moment to recognize this when it started to laugh, a bonechilling wicked laugh of pure insanity. A horrible sound that went on and on and sent a shiver running down everyone's spine as they clapped their hands over their ears in a desperate attempt to shield themselves from the evil.

"Huh, I don't under-URK!"

Akane stared in disbelief at the nine inches of reddened metal blade protruding from her front. This couldn't be happening to her!

And then the pain hit. A red hot agony that seemed to go on and on forever even as her vision darkened and her body grew cold all around. Dimly, she thought she heard her father screaming, or was it her sisters?

She would never know.

Death had claimed her.

The two drow elves took one look at the hooded figure and then tackled Ranma Saotome down, holding onto him back with a strength born of pure desperation. They recognized this card.

"LET ME GO!! THAT THING KILLED AKANE!!"

"NO!! You CAN'T!! THAT IS DEATH!! TO FIGHT IT IS TO DIE!!!"

Kasumi staggered back, her face white with shock.

And then a roar of pure rage announced the doomed folly of....

• Soun Tendo. He strikes only to learn the true terror of Death. *SLICE* Off rolls his head to the side as a second one appears in the room.
• Ryoga Hibiki. How do you fight something that is darn near impossible to hit, carries a nasty sharp weapon with a better reach then you, always attacks before you can, and never misses? Simple, you don't. You just die.
• Nabiki Tendo. Drow Paladin is all well and good, but she lacks the experience of a seasoned warrior.
• Tatewaki Kuno? Perhaps not such a great loss after all.
• Any of the Above, but they are too slow to intervene and are spared. Death takes Akane's body and vanishes, leaving the others to stare at the deck and realize it truly is a double edged sword.
• As I listen to this simple song, everything else you know is wrong.
